Bummer. Michelle Bachelet has just withdrawn from the candidates for UN Secretary General. Former Chilean President and ex-UN Human Rights Commissioner Michelle Bachelet has announced she is withdrawing her candidacy for UN Secretary-General.
“Some might say the time was not right for a candidacy like the one I sought to represent,” she noted in a video posted on her social media channels.
She also highlighted that the global situation currently faces various challenges across multiple fronts, such as human rights and climate change.
Bachelet thanked the presidents of Mexico and Brazil for supporting her candidacy. Initially Chile supported her candidacy but they were soon threatened out of that, and Mexico and Brazil took over in support. Michelle is the only candidate where two large countries supported instead of smaller island states, most probably forced to do so.
Seven candidates remain in the running — the majority from Latin America and the Caribbean, alongside contenders from Africa. There is nobody here with the deep resume and real and practical experience, fierce independence and honesty that Michelle Bachelet presents. The two Ecuadorian candidates are both nominated by small island nations.

The quiet battle
We’ve spoken about the Israeli incursion into the Latin Americas (many other countries as well). In the LAC, the people are not Iranian people despite the bitter commentary from previous supporters of Venezuela and drawging comparisons – Iran fought, Venezuela did not, and therefore they ‘deserve’ their state.
Venezuela is out in the streets demanding many things: The release of their President and his wife, transparency on the oil agreements and currently the US, through USDA, is pouring cheap food into Venezuela, destabilizing agriculture and their producers. The rice growers held a recent ‘tractorazo’ protest. Producers argue that imports from countries with subsidized agricultural sectors, including the US, create unfair competition. FEDEAGRO reports that more than 2.2 million metric tons of white corn, yellow corn and rice have entered Venezuela in 2026, more than triple the recent combined high recorded in 2023.
Rural organizations have also denounced tariff and import-tax exemptions, while rice growers say imported products have saturated storage facilities and forced them to sell below production costs. Producers are demanding state support to offset losses and protect national food production. At the same time we hear from the US that food prices for their own citizens are excessive.

China condemns Trump-signed law tightening sanctions on Russia and expanding trade restrictions on Iran, Bloomberg reports.
China’s Ministry of Commerce said Beijing “consistently opposes” unilateral and secondary sanctions that are not approved by the UN Security Council and have no basis in international law. China also warned that it will monitor Washington’s next steps and “reserves the right to take all necessary measures” to protect its interests and Chinese companies.
The statement comes just days before Trump and Xi Jinping meet in Washington. Ahead of the summit, US and Chinese officials will hold talks on trade and other disputed issues.

This bill “authorizes and expands statutory sanctions, tariffs, and prohibitions on Russia, and extends existing sanctions on Iran.”. It mandates restrictions against Russia’s top political and military leadership, state-owned companies, and secondary sanctions against Moscow’s trading partners. Moscow’s trading partners include India as well and the US has consistently tried to break that trade. It includes many countries in Eurasia.

Northern Siberia’s oil reserves, which Russia is developing and shipping via the Arctic Ocean, could give Moscow a major geopolitical advantage,. By linking Siberian production to Arctic sea routes, Russia is building a new energy corridor aimed at Asian markets, thereby expanding its export options beyond traditional routes. The first crude shipments have already departed and we only just recently heard of Vostok Oil.
Situated on the Taymyr Peninsula, Vostok Oil combines the existing Vankor fields with new deposits in the northern Krasnoyarsk Krai, drawing on a resource base estimated at around 7 billion tonnes of liquid hydrocarbons.

THE NEW LEADER of the world will be formally greeted by the old leader of the world on the coming Wednesday.
China’s President Xi Jinping will be met at the airport in Washington by the US’s President Donald Trump. Airport meetings at that level are a rare event. (Trump did not get one when he visited Xi in China.)
Then there’ll be a state banquet on Thursday, where the old US tech leader (from Apple) will meet China’s new tech leader (from Xiaomi). Headline-grabbed innovators will also meet: OpenAI on the US side and BYD on the China side.
Despite being poor and undeveloped until recently, China has grown at astonishing speed, and now has five times the number of STEM graduates a year as the US. China also has global leadership of much of the science research sector, and a lively AI industry. The US is closely focused on talking to China leaders at the moment.
Yesterday (Thursday) China’s Foreign Minister Wang Yi and his US counterpart Secretary of State Marco Rubio spoke by phone. The discussion would have been to ensure that their respective leaders were on the same page for the meetings next week. US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent is booked to meet Chinese Vice-Premier He Lifeng this weekend in New York to discuss money challenges.

Russia and China just minutes ago vetoed a draft resolution in the UN Security Council.
The draft resolution sought to strongly encourage States interested in the use of commercial maritime routes in the Strait of Hormuz – which lies between Iran, Oman and the United Arab Emirates – and to “coordinate efforts” defensively, to contribute to ensuring the safety and security of navigation there, including the use of escorts for merchant and commercial vessels.
The draft also demanded that Iran immediately cease all attacks on shipping and any attempt to impede transit or freedom of navigation in the strait.

So we know and understand why the meeting in Oman did not and could not take place. And we may also understand the massive amount of ordinance and bombs sent to Israel. It is regional ordinance.

FM Lavrov made two notable speeches in the last days. The one was at a diplomatic round-table where he noted the legal situation of the world. That was long and complicated and obviously meant to bring the Russian diplomats up to date up to the minute in terms of legalities re Ukraine. The second, and I am waiting for the transcript to be completed, was at a panel in Yekaterinburg, New World Architecture: An Open Dialogue with Sergey Lavrov. Thus far he is not mincing words and here is a little sample:
The philosophy of equality, now the dominant trend, is particularly characteristic of BRICS. Its latest summit has just taken place in India’s capital, New Delhi. The countries representing very different civilisations within this association demonstrate unity in their determination to maximise opportunities for joint development and do so not at anyone’s expense or to anyone’s detriment, but for the prosperity and security of their peoples. Russia is fully committed to this approach, which is characteristic of other associations of new type, including the SCO, the CIS, the EAEU, and the CSTO.
Unfortunately, the objective process of strengthening multipolarity is running into aggressive opposition from our Western colleagues and their elites. They continue to perceive these developments as a threat to the dominance they have enjoyed for five hundred years during the periods of slavery and colonialism, and are trying to retain their waning dominance by resorting to the most unscrupulous methods, including illegal ones, such as unilateral sanctions, outright pressure, interference in internal affairs, and instigation of conflicts.
Today, two opposing trends have collided. One is represented by those who want to preserve the old world order and its old system of governance, in which a minority benefitted from the subjugation of the majority. The second is about the emergence of a more balanced and equitable world order based on the key principles of the UN Charter, above all the principle of the sovereign equality of states. Our Western colleagues have not once respected this principle throughout the history of the world. They have always regarded themselves as the main actors who call the tune. Yet life is nevertheless forcing them back to complying with the principles of the UN Charter.

🚨 Russian forces launched a large-scale overnight strike using high-precision ground, sea, and air-based weapons and drones, hitting metallurgical and radio-electronic enterprises, military-industrial facilities, energy and transport infrastructure in Kiev, Zaporozhye, and the Odessa region — as well as vessels used by Ukrainian forces.

The strikes targeting the De Novo data center in Kiev on Thursday will create “an information vacuum and eliminate databases used to target our facilities – including those deep inside Russian territory,” military expert Col. (ret.) Anatoliy Matviychuk told Sputnik.
Besides being used to store “vast amounts of intelligence data to support the operations of Ukraine’s military” and drawn upon by Palantir, the massive data center served several other functions, including waging “information-psychological warfare on the Russian population” using local platforms.
With the facility destroyed or significantly damaged, “the whole process” of compiling intel “has to start from scratch…This represents a massive puncture in the [kill chain’s] logistics and information support for strikes against Russian territory and Russian troops,” Matviychuk emphasized.

Since September 7, Russian troops have trapped over 1,700 Ukrainian soldiers in the north of the Kharkov region, Russia’s Defense Ministry reported.

Israeli tourists face growing backlash in parts of Asia due to Gaza genocide
Israeli tourists and veterans are facing growing scrutiny in parts of Asia over their military service amid Israel’s ongoing genocide in Gaza, with residents and activists in Indonesia, the Philippines, India, and Thailand raising concerns over the conduct and presence of some visitors.
In Bali, gym owner Samir Shafiq recently ordered three Israeli tourists to leave his establishment after an argument with an Indonesian employee, confronting them over their service in the Israeli military. “If you serve the IDF, and we all know and have seen these past few years what they did and what they are still doing, yeah, you’re not allowed to come,” Shafiq told Anadolu Agency.
On the Philippine island of Siargao, advocate Rich Tuason told Anadolu that locals are experiencing “restlessness, helplessness and frustration” over an increase in Israeli visitors, including former soldiers, while concerns have also been raised about businesses and tourism services catering specifically to Israelis.
In India, where an established backpacking route known as the “Hummus Trail” draws tens of thousands of Israeli tourists each year, activist Prashant Pundir said an ecosystem of Hebrew-speaking cafes, hotels, WhatsApp groups, wellness centers and Chabad houses has developed around Israeli visitors.
The Hind Rajab Foundation also filed a complaint with Indian authorities in June seeking the arrest of Israeli soldier Eitan Gilboa over alleged participation in the destruction of civilian infrastructure in Gaza. Entering the world depression but see the next entry, Russia may be coming to some kind of rescue. We see BRICS standing up against sanctions and tariffs, as they said in their joint declaration. But what is clear is that many are going to be badly hurt.
Vessel traffic through the Strait of Hormuz remained in the single digits on Tuesday, with four crossings recorded, down from seven the previous day and well below the 10-day average of 18, according to preliminary shipping data released on Wednesday.
Two of Tuesday’s vessels were entering the waterway and two were leaving, according to the data. None were very large crude carriers or liquefied natural gas tankers.
Some vessels may be transiting Hormuz with their tracking transponders switched off and therefore would not appear in the data.
One very large gas carrier, Salute, carrying about 470,000 barrels of liquefied petroleum gas, exited through the Iranian route. Panamax-sized tanker Nautilus, carrying around 510,000 barrels of naphtha, also exited via an unidentified dark route.
Both vessels entering the strait were carrying cargo. One was a short-range dirty products tanker, while the other was a dry bulk carrier, with both entering through the Iranian route.
Meanwhile, traffic through the Bab al-Mandab Strait stood at 22 vessels, little changed from the 24 recorded a day earlier.

Global fuel crisis caused by US war on Iran finally arrives
As the Strait of Hormuz blockade continues with no end in sight, top US oil executives worry that the situation in oil markets is getting out of control.
The disruption of alternative oil transportation routes, such as the Saudi pipeline that runs to the Red Sea coast, and the depletion of commercial fuel stocks across the world, means that now there is no way to “mitigate the price and supply risk,” the WSJ reports, citing Chevron CEO Mike Wirth.
As the previously existing buffers run out, it remains unclear how high oil prices might end up going, but it seems unlikely that they will go down anytime soon, Wirth warns.
💬 “I wish I could tell you that I saw some reason why things would ease, but it’s difficult right now to see that happen,” he said at an energy conference in Texas on September 11.

LNG report from China and India (Reuters): LNG demand in China and India expected to recover when Mideast war ends
China and India’s LNG imports are expected to rebound from multi-year lows once the Middle East supply crunch eases and prices fall, according to industry executives. The current disruption linked to the U.S.-Iran war has pushed both countries to lean more heavily on coal and oil for power generation, underscoring how quickly price-sensitive Asian demand retreats when LNG becomes scarce or too expensive.
The immediate market read is straightforward: high spot LNG prices and tighter Middle East supply have already forced demand destruction in two of Asia’s most important growth markets. If the conflict premium unwinds, the first-order effect would be a return of discretionary buying from China and India, which would tighten the balance for Atlantic and Pacific Basin cargoes and reduce the temporary substitution benefit now enjoyed by coal and oil in the power mix.

Malaysia has seized three more containers bound for Israel at the Port of Tanjung Pelepas, according to Bloomberg, in what appears to be a new level of scrutiny of Israel-bound shipments.
The three containers were detained on August 19 while en route to Ashdod Port and contained electric bike parts from Chinese manufacturer Chongqing Mobimax Technology Co. Malaysian authorities are investigating their contents, and the containers remain at the port nearly a month later.
The seizures follow Malaysia’s detention of another Israel-bound container on August 7. Malaysian authorities suspected it contained weapons because it was destined for Elbit Systems.
Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim said Malaysia would not allow the country to become a conduit for trade that could support or contribute to “the cruelty of the Israeli regime.”

You do know that we are heading up to a major economic crash in the world. Yesterday I had some positivity that BRICS has a plan (and they do), but today I question my own thinking. Prof. Hudson holds the idea that the ‘pesky middle countries’ (my frustrated words and not Prof Hudson’s words), must, en bloc, repudiate or default or suspend payments on IMF debt. He explains if I understand correctly and it is not complicated now, that incoming world depression from soaring oil prices will strain the balance of payments and they simply cannot afford to pay BOTH the higher oil prices and food import prices AND pay their dollarized debts. With refineries effectively maxed out, any additional crude availability does not automatically translate into more diesel and other fuels. Saudi crown prince meets US CENTCOM chief amid Ansarallah advances
Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman met US Central Command chief Adm. Brad Cooper and his delegation in Jeddah today, Saudi Press Agency (SPA) reported, as Saudi-backed forces face mounting battlefield pressure from Ansarallah in Yemen.
The meeting addressed Saudi-US relations and regional developments, with Saudi Minister of State and National Security Adviser Musaed bin Mohammed al-Aiban also in attendance. The talks come amid Ansarallah attacks targeting Saudi energy infrastructure and rapid advances by the movement along Yemen’s western coast.
The meeting also follows reports that Riyadh has sought US military assistance against Ansarallah. Axios reported last week that Saudi Arabia was urging US President Donald Trump for military intervention, while Washington has so far limited its support to intelligence and targeting assistance.
It was also stated in Hebrew media that the Saudis sent an ‘indirect’ request for Israeli intelligence assistance.

What is also becoming clear, is that there were two Gulf Monarchies that spiked the Iranian meeting slated for today in Oman, to regularize traffic through the Strait of Hormuz. This was Bahrain and Saudi Arabia. I consider this the most serious vector of a new continuous war today. The US does not want the war in West Asia to come to an end. It suits their purposes of chaos across the world and of a serious economic crash world wide. They will thus in this way use Yemen as an inadvertent proxy for their objectives. If Yemen continues fighting, and they will, Saudi Arabia might continue with a little help from their friends, and war overall continues at any level possible. In my opinion it is the US that is spiking every attempt to regularize the Strait of Hormuz traffic and now Bab El Mandeb.
