Stumpy is a literary invention. A foil or mirror. Mark Twain – see his collected short stories and you’ll discover similar people, or, for that matter both Huck Finn and Tom Sawyer…The model, well, the name, borrowed from the history of the Jewish Mafia in Hollywood…”Stumpy” Zevon…the history says he supervised the bookmaking racket for the Mickey Cohen gang, which was actually pretty genteel (most of the time, Mickey said “I never killed no man that didn’t have it coming.”  …and I think that’s true. I myself briefly had a part time job working for a Cohen group bookmaker – the front being a profitable liquor store…). Stumpy worked from his office at the Asbestos Paint Company – a storefront on Melrose ave, (iirc). Not very far from Larchmont avenue, and the studios…lotta studio folks bet on things. In the invented Stumpy’s world he has a bar, trailerpark, marina, etc… just outside of a fictitious town, “Anoxia”….there are fictitious cops too, on Stumpy’s payroll, naturally. And fictitious businesses and imaginary highways and rivers and lakes… Travelers stop by and say things that get quoted, as do Stumpy and the fellas. And yes, Stumpy, the real guy, had a son, Warren Zevon, alas gone too young.  There’s also a mob fixer…but the reality is that I dated that guy’s daughter…so he’s not spoken of…she’s probably still living….and most people never knew he was a fixer. Interestingly, most of these men grew up in Boyle Heights, a then fairly poor Jewish neighborhood…and the sheriff (not sayin’ which sheriff!) was in their gang…one reason Mickey managed to mostly stay outta the crossbar hotel…until the feds (I think it was the feds) went after him… Warren Zevon died young, probably from playing in the asbestos in the back of Stumpy’s store…  A detail, not only was the mob close to the cops, it was also close to the State Bar…but that story is going to stay unspoken. Anyway, the imaginary town and county of Anoxia is my invention, and a wall to bounce off of….hey, people have fun… 😉  Old guys spend lots of time in memories of when they were kids…a kid in Anoxia. When Truman was prez, and the army was in Korea… a million years ago. Take a few key-words from the story and sleuth ’round the net…most or all of what I’ve said you’ll find in detail… and have fun too.
