Nanjing Drum Tower Hospital (affiliated with Nanjing University) reported long-term follow-up results from a phase 2 clinical study published in Nature Medicine. Researchers used induced pluripotent stem cell (iPSC)-derived heart muscle cells injected into patients with severe heart failure (during or after bypass surgery).

Key result: 9 out of 10 patients (90%) who received the stem-cell-derived cardiomyocytes showed significantly better cardiac function at the 12-month follow-up compared with the control group.
The approach aims to help damaged or ageing hearts grow new muscle tissue, since dead heart muscle does not naturally regenerate.
