Trump’s armada will be the primary target for Iran’s attacks. Iran cannot allow the carrier group to dominate the Arabian Sea, cutting all trade and allowing airstrikes against their homeland. The carrier group is presently operating at about 700 km from Iran’s coast, at long range for it’s strike aircraft to conduct attacks. But it is still within Iranian missile range if the ships can accurately be targeted. The long range also means satellites can potentially detect airstrikes long before they are close enough to attack.

Attacking a US carrier group effectively would require saturating it’s SAM defenses with massive numbers of missiles, drones and decoys, so that not only the aircraft carrier but also it’s escorts become overwhelmed. Such an attack would potentially result in nothing if electronic warfare or insufficient weapons prevent critical hits on the carrier. On the other hand, an overwhelming attack could sink not only the carrier but it’s escort and auxiliary ships as well. The potential loss in this case would be politically staggering. Iran has the capability to launch hundreds of missiles simultaneously, as Israel experienced, but to attack a carrier group would require precise targeting and ideally electronic warfare to mask the attack and confuse the defenses. Yes, I suppose he does. More generally the conflict is foundational, the contradictions civilizational and long standing…over a hundred years, robust and unsettling to the mind…such a situation can be resolved only by violence, generally by killing. He longs for resolution, which, seemingly paradoxically, is actually longing for peace. Even though a violent resolution is inevitable and proximate, it is not good to loose the passions and lust for evil, be it a necessary sort or a willful sort.
