I have a 100 year old handbook for merchant officers that includes images of US Navy re-fueling and supplying at sea…one ship took the other in tow…and over the cable a clam-shell or skip transferred coal! ….the tow used constant tension steam winches…sailors then moved the coal, by hand, into the bunkers….!

I have also a handbook for ship radio officers from the 1920…and get this, a description of a germanium transistor used as a detector-amplifier…a circuit diagram…with the caption that “presently the state of scientific understanding does not explain this” or words to that effect.  The transistor was known long before Bell Labs and the Nobel Prize for it… And I have proof, known and in use…but clumsy and tricky to get it to work.
