Much depends on the emergency systems…and the specific conditions.  If, for example, the plant is really hot, running anywhere near capacity, and is suddenly disconnected, the plant “trips” and cooling pumps stop. The US PWR’s (roughly 1000 megawatt output) specified that the Standby Diesels had to come from zero but warm to 100% power in 10 seconds. Then parallel (there are more than one EDG) and assume their load, mostly pumps. After that the emergency cooling begen. A hot-tripped  plant that stays disconnected may require these engines and systems for many months. They burn a lot of fuel. And they too require cooling systems…generally in my experience direct jacket water to air (similar to giant car “radiators”) But perhaps with evaporative chillers using local water supply to “shell and tube” cooling. Note that the rated power output is only a fraction of the heat dissipation… If the overheat the pretty little tubes inside the reactor distort, melt, expose highly chemically reactive metals to their jacket water which is under maybe a thousand pounds per square inch of hot liquid water pressure. There is then a violent reaction liberating hydrogen gas… it’s can be very very very bad. A cascade of horrors. Hair-lipped kids with 3 arms and no legs sort of horrors.

EDG may have fuel for 30 days. EDG are tested (30 day intervals? ) It would be, imho, better to run the diesels all the time at light (50% ?) load and have a year of fuel at all times. They may, in some example, have an overhaul interval of 50,000 hours. That way the operators would have a fine idea of their actual reliability. 😉

Sawmill, trucking companies, orchards… hard work good wage places. There is also a criminal class that gets more violent by degrees. Recalling that at one time the Courthouse was generally empty and the jail quiet… now they’re building a new and bigger jail… In Twain’s time it would have had a gallows, and almost no crime, and few laws. The old jail still exists. A 10′ x 10′ stone jail with a cot and a bucket. It’s in the old Capital town, and sits now in a park next to a museum and baseball diamond, soccer field…
