A lengthy essay. Worth reading. Worth keeping a copy too.  Noting that many of the ships subject to attack are bulk carriers, and many carry grain. In the instance even a minor damage by rockets, etc, may result in the ruin of a cargo.

Wet grain in a badly damaged ship may even swell to such an extent that the internal pressure breaks the ship open.

Note the cargo ships have no defensive abilities and cannot assist in defending the escorts. It’s as if the cargo ships weren’t there at all. One military target, or at most a small number. However such strategy changes the political effect, particularly if escort ships burn or sink, eg many navy sailors die. Such political effect would, imho, increase chaos and factional strife within the various political and operational structures  of the State(s) attempting to escort. In the present example such political effect would probably be consistent with the aims of the parties objecting to the mass murder of the owners of Palestine.
