Doctorow, ah, well, trust had not occured to me in that context. I assume he’s pretty worried, and maybe he’s addressing the nazi faction while pretending to address us. Rhetoric works that way, and he’s perhaps more subtle than he seems. My thoughts about the sell out run to that they decided to bribe themselves, thus since the bosses were functionally bourgeois, they wanted power and wealth…and stole it, with also, in some cases, the realization that a moribund situation called for a revolution, such as it was, and became. Whether by thoughtful deliberation, subornation, or accident, probably these and more, it worked.

I suppose “why now” hinges on the audience. But why now is always an important analytical wedge in rhetoric. Many US persons, seeing the picture and reading it, people who hold the Marines as an icon, will be appalled. Of course it’s typical, but they have been able to pretend otherwise.
