Sal Mercogliano – a maritime historian at Campbell University (@campbelledu) and former merchant mariner – discusses the attack on the St Kitts and Nevis flagged bulk carrier Ava by the Russians on September 12, 2024, in Romanian waters while sailing from Ukraine to Egypt with a cargo of grain.

The claim that Ruskie did it is just a claim, see the story at splash247.

ParticipantI find Sal quite amusing, and I agree, a one-tree fella. This is a fault I see almost everywhere in “the west”, they say it’s “focus”, or “specialization”. The result is naturally blindness, and no matter how brilliant the individual, the collective stupidity of failure of empire… And that’s why I am amused. There’s the forest, Sal… If I was a young fellow of course I would be, ah, somewhere else, you know, and lending a hand with, ah, the necessary work. As it is I have the proverbial front row seat at the freak show. Perhaps that’s why I began with Korman and Conway, two comedians, and their potty jokes. I didn’t know these guys, but I had free tickets for awhile to their on stage touring, as we had a friend who was Korman’s cousin. The US is becoming a vast potty joke.
I have never known a construction job that did not involve bribery. I assume that the fine fellers of the
Ghost Card, er, Coast Guard are not immune. And the US East Coast is especially known for pay-offs.Cabal?, naw, just stand back an’ let it happen. It’s not necessary to chivvy it along, most of the time.
………..
But speaking of fubars reminds me of the bomb, and that reminds me of the Ruskies, and my expectation of a change in their nuclear doctrine, and that reminds me of Doctorow, whom I think is trying very hard to get through to the stupids that they’re liable to actually get fried if they keep doin’ what they’re doin’. I think it’s hopeless to try to fix stupid.

ParticipantI recollect Harvey Korman and Tim Conway discussing “potty jokes”, a term from Vaudeville…they’re considered to be a rather desperate form.
Here’s Sal the Sailorman doing potty jokes about bridges and poop transport, and other materials, on US rivers. “Bridge Construction and U.S. Coast Guard Apathy Leads to 💩 Backing Up On U.S. Waterways”
Some might imagine that, metaphorically speaking, poop is backed up in Washington too. That say it floats to the top…

The Pentagon will simulate the consequences of a nuclear explosion in Russia and Europe
WASHINGTON, September 12-RIA Novosti. The US military intends to study the consequences of the use of nuclear weapons for the agricultural sector of Eastern Europe, including Russia, according to Pentagon documents reviewed by RIA Novosti.
Why not simulate the consequences of nuclear explosions in Kansas, fellas? It might be more useful!

ParticipantIt’s always interesting, sometimes worthwhile to ask, when an article is published, to consider why the editor chose to publish it…I suppose there’s internal factional pressure in the direction described, pressure on the Policy and on Putin.
“Russia’s nuclear doctrine urgently needs to be revised to allow a nuclear response to any major military aggression against the country, former Kremlin adviser Sergey Karaganov stated on Wednesday.” and so on.

ParticipantLongtimeago I had a few, a very few, count ’em on one hand few, teachers who said true things. A German born sent to escape the nazi draft to live in the Dakotas with his grandparents, who taught history with rigor, with emphasis on the power of money, occult money, dark force money “clubs”, which drive events. Another from the Carolinas, who taught that walking in the woods when you come upon a still, turn ’round and go the other way, ’cause those boys have you in thar’ rifle sights. And best of all, when walking in the woods an’ ya’ come upon a smokin’ pile of bear chit, he’s lettin’ you know that if you go on, he’ll hunt you.
The bridge that fell seems to have been a stressed span, not a cantenary. I see no suspension cables. A stressed span of concrete is in internal compression by cast in place steel rods or cables. These of course are in very high tension, they are tightened with very powerful tensioning machine wrenches to a calculated stress, or stretch. The rods are actually functioning as very long stiff springs. It is possible, sometimes, to release the tension due to corrosion, or deliberately. Then the span fails. Perhaps not instantly, but the bottom of the span is in tension, and concrete is very weak when you pull on it. It’s strength in compression is very high. I’m saying that there is a possibility of sabotage. Think of a stack of dominoes held horizontally in a vise. Place a weight in mid span. Now slowly loosen the vise. That’s what happens. Not everybody in Germany is happy, and it is in East Germany, eh?

ParticipantJust recalling> First drone was used in WW1. Gyros and compass and revolutions to target, called “the bug”. Control systems were inadequate. Big guns were probably cheaper and more effective. Actor-inventor Reginald Denny (!) developed (late 1930’s-early 1940’s) radio-control drones as targets, Marlyn Monroe (!) helped building drones in Burbank (!). The development of television by radio enabled the US to fly drone P-38 photo recons over Japan late in WW2. The equipment was primitive and it took a large airplane, a converted bomber with a specialized crew, to fly the P-38 drone. The P-38 was a fast twin fighter-bomber with big merlin or packard V12 engines and significantly, electrical power aplenty from alternator instead of dynamo generators. The V-1 was a drone. Later the radio-guided rocket ground to air drone was tested by the nazi Germans late in WW2, against B-17’s. Never properly developed, they say 17 kills in 18 tests, iirc. After the war things got very much more innarrestin’ And the batteries and the computers got lighter and vastly cheaper and better! As we see…
