The British police do not dispute that Medhurst is a journalist and that the seized phones are tools used in the journalistic profession, the problem is that they nevertheless demand access to the data in a procedure like this: the reporter reveals passwords, the information contained in the phones is placed in the hands of an ‘independent’ police officer or lawyer, who are charged with sifting through them and deciding which are to be protected by journalist-source confidentiality and which are not. Basically a way of serving sensitive information to the British government on a silver platter. If the British authorities prevail, no journalist travelling to London will be safe.

Remark> A procedure whereby the traveler cannot know the password is easily conceived. For example a trusted party, possibly a machine, input ahead of traveling, a random and complex password. This password is not available to anyone except under well-defined conditions, such as permission by a third party. The persons, and if used, machines, are located outside UK control or jurisdiction. For myself, I often forget passwords, and expect y’all do too… 😉  Therefore I generally jot them down in mnemonic code and place them in a “safe” place….one known only to a different person. That’s a sort of primitive form. Alternatively, using a pre-secreted one-time-pad that was previously established with a foreign location the traveler may receive, well after passing cop inspection, the password in encrypted form by radio or even in some other cooperative broadcast. Noting that since this and other tactics can exist, it’s credible for an Nth traveler to say to the cops that he does not know the password. Indeed, he may not know it.
