About the Los Angeles cold-storage warehouse fire. I have no idea what caused the fire. The roof was covered with solar panels.  These each produce a modest direct current and voltage…something in the order of 40 volts and something like 10 amps, maybe less…it’s variable according to design. The panels are connected in series, generally with a male-female plug-socket called “MC-4” (when I built a system I soldered the connections – because a poor connection will cause a DC arc that will start a fire or at least damage the system and put it out of operation) Anyway, the DC voltage in a series can be quite high – hundreds of volts. And the MC-4 or similar connector tends to deteriorate over time, corrosion, no inspection, oxidation, and UV damage. The MC-4 is not soldered, it’s crimped – often during the installation work. DC arcs are really really nasty. Unlike AC arcs, the ionization does not go out…and water can make things worse, fast!

Of course maybe it was arson. I suppose that a fella might even trigger an arc failure with a slingshot or a catapult and rocks (or a drone). My experience is that “maintenance” fellas like to spend idle time on the roof… Why, I remember guys hiding on the roof over a cobalt 60 radiation source…  Terminal dumbazz… but that’s another story…  😉  Maybe the fellers were careless smoking weed on the roof…
