Burevestnik atomic motor is a turbo-jet of special characteristics. This means that it depends on rotating machine elements (compressor and turbine) and the open flow of fluid – air – of uncertain qualities. Flying at low altitude, as it does, the air is more like a soup of “plankton” – dust and suspended microscopic and occasionally macroscopic plant and animal (the odd bird feather, or bird is not excluded) . There is therefore an assumed operational life for the flow-contacting and abrading surfaces. Less variable, but no less important is the bearing life, largely a matter of lubrication. Obviously the bearings cannot be serviced in flight. Time to engine failure is not infinite. Some helicopter turbine-engines “choke” on debris in minutes, when they fly in poor conditions. Time to failure might be something like 2,000 hours – just a WAG (wildazzguess) – or maybe 20,000 – or maybe 500 – depending on, mostly, the qualities of the air. I don’t think Burevestnik would do well in a sand-storm, and even hard rain might be a problem. So-called “FOD” is the bane of turbines and compressors. “The most common causes of gas turbine failure include thermal fatigue, oxidation, corrosion, foreign object damage (FOD), combustion instability [not a factor in the atomic motor], rotor imbalance, and seal leakage.”
