Participantahh, Mr.P i used to love the hen house, the small chicks best of all. my chore was feeding the chickens, turkeys & geese. the geese took me for their own & would surround me, protecting me from my older brothers. i’d spend entire afternoons along the creek with the geese & ducks & family pup.
about raccoons: a bowl of ammonia works. smelly as they are they are very smell sensitive. o/c it helps not to have hole they can slip through, &, yes, they are smart with nifty pickpocket hands. once i had a family ensconced in the garden shed. the fellow i hired, told me, if you take a kit, the parents will scoop the remaining & abandon the ‘home’. so he took a pretty kit to a nearby wildlife rescue & the parents did indeed collect the remaining 3 & abandoned the shed.
i’ve a huge old cherry that every summer will bring a huge old raccoon soon as the cherries are lime green & far from ripe & he’ll take 2, maybe 3 days to strip every cherry. his agility, flexibility can be hypnotizing. he’s deliberate, methodical & never leaves the crows or me so much as one, no matter how we clamour or harass, the ground below is thick with the stones, the sum of all he cares to share.
best of luck, & hello to Mrs.P

Participantgreat share, thank you, anil. may it mark the beginning of a fine foundation, for it feels inevitable, africa’s history like its future is a tsunami slowly mounting.
obviously this share doesn’t fit on the Africa thread…yet every time i read about the transformation occurring throughout china’s deserts i think of the sahel. this then is my daydream hoping to seed the african sahel, for shamans tell us reality begins within our dreams.

Participantrumpadah;
albortia would’ve embraced murika…if agent orangutang had but asked sweetly or @ least politely. albortia’s hate for ontario/ottawa & quebec is long standing. michael hudson was mildly dismayed orange had so clumsily misplayed his hand. O well.
re: raccoons as pets:
in high school there was a kid who had a pet raccoon. it slept with him, he hand fed it, he’d rescued/nipped it from the brood. it didn’t need a leash but followed everywhere he’d go. one sad day he moved quickly, without thinking, & the pet took firm hold of his achilles & bit clear through. wild things being what they are.
once returning from a long day harvesting, my father glanced in the rearview mirror of the old blue plymouth, not expecting anything but dust, & there was a wolverine staring him straight in the eye. the animal took up the entire rear window, staring @ him sharp as a sniper. father, eyes locked on the mirror brought the car to a drifting stop, slowly gunslinger cool dropped his hand from the wheel, opened the door & slid out.
wolverines were always around but you never saw them. hardly ever left so much as a track in the snow.
