today…after feeding the nuthatches & chickadees crushed peanuts from my palm, i paused along dallas to stare up @ the clouds, late afternoon, another of monet’s stunning attempts to outdo turner.

an irish chap stopped to chat, the light & clouds made conversation easy, natural.   in victoria our city council is always an ice breaker, in short order we had established our ground.  he began…he worked out @ a community centre’s gym.  very nice, very good.   no, not @ all.  not a bit of it.  it’s supposed to be open until 10pm, which allowed him time after work to have dinner with his kids, help with homework & see them off to bed before hurrying, off to the gym for a quick work out & a proper steam.   hmm, i managed, very good very nice.

“no, not @ all!  not a bit of it!    for the last month it’s no longer accessible—it closes @ 8pm!  it’s a community gym.  my bloody gym.”

i returned to studying the drift of clouds, now curiously the colour of the sea.

“they close the entire gym, shut it down, my gym, with blackout curtains—even the windows, so no one can see in!”

i move politely away.     “it’s just women!  special imported immigrants afraid someone might see them.”

i turn, “immigrants?–from where?  where in the world are women afraid of being seen working out!”

“i don’t fuckin know—iran?   i think, yeah, iran.”

“persians?! no way!   they are not persians!  persian women are rich, they aren’t bussed to public gyms, they all have their own trainers in their private gym.   they’re here to flaunt their hair, their plastic surgery & gold in front of cameras to regime change iran—it’s why they get priority.”

“well, i don’t fuckin know, alls i know is they’re women who can’t be seen & takeover my gym—a community gym—every fuckin night for 2 fuckin hours.”

“have you seen these women?”

“as a matter of fact i have—i stuck around.  they arrive in a luxury bus with blacked out windows.  big & black as the lieutenant governor’s &  they’re head to toe black tents, could be guys under all that, no way they can work out in it, & they don’t need fuckin black out curtains, there’s no way anybody could see a fuckin thing, let alone a face.”

“so if they aren’t working out, what do you suppose they’re doing?”

“god bloody knows!  whatever it is, the bunch of em, men women or some weird combo, aren’t working out.  i don’t believe a bit of it.  not a fuckin bit.  god knows what they’re up to or what’s what!  alls i can say for sure is the country’s not headed straight to hell it’s already kentucky fried.”
