That makes me think of the US torture program and I remember Trump saying he does not think waterboarding is so bad .. and then the whole torture program was buried .. nobody ever really was punished for what they did, and yet these people belong in institutions with muzzles on the mouths and straightjackets.

The Berlin Conference oh boy.  The biggest problem was to define What is Effective Colonization.  One has to be somewhat calm, as it is a wholesale mess now.  One has to accept that colonization was the order of the day and one cannot throw that period away from your history.

It is a hard issue – does one start with the situation on the ground, or does one say, throw it away and start new?  Starting with the situation on the ground and working through the problems of borders designed by hyper colonialists (don’t forget slavery at the time), seems to me a better way forward.  But the Africans are also nowadays a little big for their breeches and want things given to them, as a result of a horrible colonial episode.  Like others, they are going to have to sit down and sort out the hard way.  Religion is also an issue.

I would consider the East West road as perhaps not critical, but an opportunity that may solve other issues in the process of doing business.

The Balfour Declaration was a public statement issued by the British Government in 1917 during the First World War announcing its support for the establishment of a “national home for the Jewish people” in Palestine, then an Ottoman region with a small minority Jewish population. The declaration was contained in a letter dated 2 November 1917 from the United Kingdom’s Foreign Secretary Arthur Balfour to Lord Rothschild, a leader of the British Jewish community, for transmission to the Zionist Federation of Great Britain and Ireland. The text of the declaration was published in the press on 9 November 1917.

Immediately following Britain’s declaration of war on the Ottoman Empire in November 1914, it began to consider the future of Palestine. Within two months a memorandum was circulated to the War Cabinet by a Zionist member, Herbert Samuel, proposing the support of Zionist ambitions in order to enlist the support of Jews in the wider war. A committee was established in April 1915 by British Prime Minister H. H. Asquith to determine their policy towards the Ottoman Empire including Palestine. Asquith, who had favoured post-war reform of the Ottoman Empire, resigned in December 1916; his replacement David Lloyd George favoured partition of the Empire. The first negotiations between the British and the Zionists took place at a conference on 7 February 1917 that included Sir Mark Sykes and the Zionist leadership. Subsequent discussions led to Balfour’s request, on 19 June, that Rothschild and Chaim Weizmann submit a draft of a public declaration. Further drafts were discussed by the British Cabinet during September and October, with input from Zionist and anti-Zionist Jews but with no representation from the local population in Palestine.

By late 1917, in the lead-up to the Balfour Declaration, the wider war had reached a stalemate, with two of Britain’s allies not fully engaged: the United States had yet to suffer a casualty, and the Russians were in the midst of a revolution with Bolsheviks taking over the government. A stalemate in southern Palestine was broken by the Battle of Beersheba on 31 October 1917. The release of the final declaration was authorised on 31 October; the preceding Cabinet discussion had referenced perceived propaganda benefits amongst the worldwide Jewish community for the Allied war effort.

The opening words of the declaration represented the first public expression of support for Zionism by a major political power. The term “national home” had no precedent in international law, and was intentionally vague as to whether a Jewish state was contemplated. The intended boundaries of Palestine were not specified, and the British government later confirmed that the words “in Palestine” meant that the Jewish national home was not intended to cover all of Palestine. The second half of the declaration was added to satisfy opponents of the policy, who had claimed that it would otherwise prejudice the position of the local population of Palestine and encourage antisemitism worldwide by “stamping the Jews as strangers in their native lands”. The declaration called for safeguarding the civil and religious rights for the Palestinian Arabs, who composed the vast majority of the local population, and also the rights and political status of the Jewish communities in other countries outside of Palestine. The British government acknowledged in 1939 that the local population’s wishes and interests should have been taken into account, and recognised in 2017 that the declaration should have called for the protection of the Palestinian Arabs’ political rights.

The declaration had many long-lasting consequences. It greatly increased popular support for Zionism within Jewish communities worldwide, and became a core component of the British Mandate for Palestine, the founding document of Mandatory Palestine. It indirectly led to the emergence of the State of Israel and is considered a principal cause of the ongoing Israeli–Palestinian conflict, often described as the world’s most intractable. Controversy remains over a number of areas, such as whether the declaration contradicted earlier promises the British made to the Sharif of Mecca in the McMahon–Hussein correspondence.

The other stuff such as ‘God’s Chosen People’ and so on are all constructs of pure advertising.  All the stories about a safe land after or during the 2ndWW may be questionable – all of it.  This, the Balfour Declaration, happened in first world war timeframe.

I grew up in a Jesus was a Jew home and this was part and parcel of our discussion all through my life.  My grandparents believed in a ‘homeland for the Jews’.  My father, who was a businessman having big business with the Jews (we did not know the name zionist at the time), kept saying .. Stop this already .. It is the Jews causing the problems!  He knew, sitting on big boards with them, in the meat and land business.  As children, we knew if we should happen to answer the phone, and it was a Jewish businessman from my dad’s business, to say nothing – be very cordial, call my dad or take a message, and if my dad was at home, quickly get paper and pen and write everything in that phone conversation down – because ‘Hymie’ Lies!  And so I learned that ‘Hymie’ lies by my own note-taking.     

My grandmother, a very wise woman, came to her senses I cannot remember during which war.  I was the only grandchild allowed to go into her cupboard and take out some of her precious keepsakes and repack.  One day I found a Qur’an on the highest shelf, where nobody could really see it.  Of course, I asked her why she keeps this book of the Muhamedan thinking that we were both immediately going to be killed by christian lightening strike as punishment!  And she answered me .. Because when this family opens their eyes, they will find that the Muhamedans are certainly also People of the Book.  What exactly she meant at the time I was not sure, but she said it with so much conviction, helped me to dust the book and place it back in the highest place in the house with reverence, which was solely under her own control.  I never said anything to anyone – I was too darn scared to get my grandmother into trouble which I did not know what form it could take.

My grandfather studied and I am sure besides religion I grew up with older Golda Mier speeches on the radio.  My grandparents basically raised me as my parents were very busy with business.  In the evenings while my grandmother finished the dinner, I sat outside on the veranda with my grandfather listening to something serious.  And he exlained.  What a life we lead .. at the dinner table my dad got us to debate.  And as soon as someone was winning a debate, he would change .. OK .. you take this argument and you take this one and would swap, so that we got to argue both sides.  In later years it was myself and my dad, debating politics.  I was glad of the lessons from my grandfather because my dad certainly did not always win.  That is probably why I did not carry on with legal studies as my dad wanted for me, but changed to one half psychology and the other half development of countries, known as geopolitics today.

The operation was carried out with a new drone named “Yaffa,” which is capable of bypassing the enemy’s interception systems and cannot be detected by radar. The operation successfully achieved its objectives.

The Yemeni Armed Forces declare the occupied Yaffa area as an unsafe zone and a primary target within the range of our weapons. We will focus on targeting the zionist enemy’s internal front and penetrating deep into its territory.

In announcing this qualitative operation, the Yemeni Armed Forces affirm that they possess a bank of targets in occupied Palestine, including sensitive military and security targets, and will, with Allah’s help, continue to strike these targets in response to the enemy’s massacres and daily crimes against our brothers in Gaza.

It was planned – it was planned by alphabet – to scare the bejeesus out of him for after November – a warning in other words.  I’m not paying too much attention but this is one that I have not seen.

I am having a hell of a time just finding yesterday UNSC speeches and Mr.Lavrov right at the moment talking Gaza. No live can I find and their stuff is always live.

I have a feeling there is a kink in the airwaves.
