The Sahara was green for nine thousand years.

Rivers. Herds. Towns.

Then the monsoon moved. The land died. Centuries later a man read the animals painted on the rock and said this was not always sand.

They called him a fantasist.

The cores and satellites later proved him right.

Europe had a wet century too.

Not because Brussels willed it.

Because energy was cheap, a factory could rise before the decade ended, and young people still had a reason to stay.

Then the rains shifted for real reasons. Energy got expensive, the workforce aged, Asia learned to make what we used to make.

That is climate.

It is not a conspiracy.

The EU’s mistake I mean the one that will look childish in fifty years was treating a vanished monsoon as a filing error.

When the water left, it did not drill.

It wrote procedures for swimming.

Permits stacked on permits.

Safety stacked on safety.

A continent that once built things began to authorize the memory of building them.

Deserts are not made only by heat.

They are finished by people who keep governing a river after the river is gone.

What we are mocked for today that will be obvious tomorrow?

You cannot regulate rain back into the sky.

You can only become the world’s most elegant sand.
