I think the Borzzikman announcement is approximately accurate. Nuclear, and “thermonuclear” experiments in the destruction of LEO satellites began in the late 1950’s…but the theory goes back to the fellas on the Mesa in 1944, or even before that. I “did” a 4th of July night time display party, with my parents! in the ’70’s and chatted with a Cal Tech physicist about the subject…he tossed it off as easy to do. Suggested ideal altitude, etc. That’s my opinion too. I had assumed that probably such a weapon either existed or would exist. That it does merely sobers, due to the implications.

Thermo-nuclear means fission-fusion. A nuclear fission compresses Lithium 6 and some other stuff and hydrogen forms and fusions to helium…. H and He are on the opposite ends of the curve of binding energy…makes a big bang when a gadget brings them together.

What is interesting is the timing of the “leak”… not an announcement, but a warning that the Russian have the weapon and are willing to use it, thus that they have decided at Policy and Strategic level that the Empire will force a hot world war. In such a war the elimination of enemy communications would transfer the advantage to the strong economies and large armies, navies, ….  ie to Global South. At least I see it that way.
