In modern pumped systems there are feedback controls, chemical additives, and so on…how these tasks are done in the old ways is sometime I hope to learn.

The gas problem touches everything. Some are fairly common, like argon…(about 1% of air is argon) but getting it smooshed into a can at 3000psi is not a backyard project. The sexy gasses are much harder to capture and clean up…fractional distillation and probably catalysts too….mucho kilowatthours. Build machine to do this? Start with the foundry, casting pump casings and motor frames…takes several years, and that’s if you really care.
