It is undefined question. Carriers are offensive weapons platforms. If they are damaged, say by damage to the machinery or a fire, or by disease, etc, and they cannot project force, cannot launch aircraft…then they are simply expensive liabilities. Sinking a carrier is another matter. There are Russian and Chinese  missiles especially designed to do that. Moving to modern conditions, the propaganda value of destroying a carrier is immense. Hard to sink, but they burn pretty well…all the ordnance and fuel carries a great risk of fire. If Iran punches a few holes in the flight deck they can’t launch, and if the punches cause a fire in the next deck down, the hanger deck…then a very bad fire may result. If it happens the nazis will, naturally, lie about it.
