Well, the stuff with kids had not occurred to me. Even now after all these years I remain naive, at lest in default mode.

Honestly, I am mystified by that sort of thing. I understand boys (and girls) fool around sometimes and even do dress-up… not nice or good, but I get it…it’s a bad habit not to be encouraged… But the stories we hear about the children make no sense to me… those people are crazy.

A nagging question, one that is seldom faced, is what is a weapon. Is the bomb a weapon?

Reviewing Britannica and dictionaries for key concepts, combat  (fight) is not within the definition of exterminate. Blasting a city to ash is not a fight, there is no essential duality, the fellows in target zone can’t fight, they don’t even know about it, well, maybe for a little while after it happens…and such infernal machine can be transported by donkey…so the idea of spotting an incoming rocket and “defense” become, well, more or less unreal.

Reviewing similarly for weapon, there are key implications… weapons have focus, and in the matter of war, they are opposed by weapons that are actually used.

Bashing along this line of thought, recalling the past use of the bomb, asking what was it used for?

Technical tests and improvements, of course, engineering science…but in the political and military direction?

First 3 blast were effects tests, all three on innocents, the first group being Americans down-wind.

Truman “used” the gadget, threatened the Red Army with it, forcing withdrawal from Iran, they tell us.

Just now, it seems to me, the bomb is not a weapon, fails to meet the critical aspects of the character of weapon. But can this change? Can a not-weapon become a weapon?

Party A uses gadget A to liquidate 500,000 innocents in Zone B. So far, this is mere extermination, not combat, not weapon.

If, then, in either anticipation or reply, Party B, using gadget,  liquidates a similar number in Zone A, or maybe sinks ships, burns refineries, etc.

(note that the bomb is no longer secret, and has become fairly easy to build)

It seems to me that upon the latter instant all the extant bombs (poof!) become weapons.

The eventualities are pretty obvious…pretty soon (maybe) all the thousands of pretty little cans of exquisite manufacture will as though by magic change from threat to weapon.

Then the questions all change… Of course, it may be that there’s an stage intermediate, the parties resume “testing”, which is mostly threats. Appallingly, that may be the best we can realistically hope for.
