While my personal recollection was that under-ground atomic test explosions were 100% detectable via seismic  “signature”, evidently this is not necessarily the case for small devices. A very large chemical explosion can mask a near-simultaneous  small atomic explosion, the learned boffins say. And, in a similar way, a small atomic explosion in a very large plenary space “muffles” the “signature”.

In any event, Strategy suggests that ambiguity may be the best path to flummox the decision-making of a putative opponent. Recalling Master Sun Tsu, all war is based on deception.  Which is to opine that if Iran has tested an atomic machine we will probably know in the fullness of time.

One does need more than the “poot” – there’s some engineering and bits necessary to get the stuff to “go”… Much of that may be done in advance and on the shelf, who can say? That said, the ultra-simple “Hiroshima” machine was, though very inefficient, inelegant, a sure thing not worth testing.

Probably better to burn coal than methane, especially LNG. (I think that’s obvious anyway)

(The paper doesn’t speak of this, but look at the chemistry… burning CH3 makes CO2 and H2O. The water vapor soaks up much of the heat, it also causes all sorts of nasty corrosion, embrittlement, and acids. Coal, on the other hand, is much hotter, Make nice dry CO2 which has a nice specific heat…that means better heat transfer and creates a gas stream that’s easier to manage in terms of scrubbing. Moreover, there’s coal all over the place…transport is often cheaper and shorter routes.)
