Not that it probably matters, but I have trouble with the oft-repeated phrase “self-defense”.

Let’s play… “After school in 1956 Larry chased a frightened Jimmy past the flag pole and caught him, and beat Jimmy badly. In 1974 Larry walked into a bar in ‘Frisco. Jimmy was the bar-tender. Recognizing Larry, Jimmy pull the shotgun out from behind the bar and used it to kill Larry.  Jimmy claims self-defense. We can be sure that Larry never again hit Jimmy or anybody else.

The story can be re-played in other ways. When is tit for tat “self-defense”, or is it ever? How is this different from fighting a duel? And so forth.

When is vengeance and/or reprisal, “self-defense”, if ever?

If an attack is likely to result in a counter attack, is it logical to see it as “self-defense”?

These and similar considerations all rush to mind every time I hear the phrase “self-defense”, which I suspect has no semantic value beyond immediate and actual defense. That’s to say the popular usage of this phrase has become a rhetorical refuge in the arena of emotion.
