I wonder if Dmitry Kuzyakin’s correct about “unlikely to notice”… There is always an EMP associated with an atomic detonation, and if this takes place at higher altitudes, such as low earth orbit the EMP can be very wide-spread…disfunctions of radio, telephone and communications generally, as well as electric power supplies, are liable to occur….and so people will begin to prise out the general idea pretty quickly.

    TASS>

Dmitry Kuzyakin, General Designer of the Russian Center for Integrated Unmanned Solutions, speaking to TASS:

Movie for to-night On the Beach   😉   ….https://archive.org/details/on-the-beach-1959

Russians have developed a set of scenarios for the use of a special Doomsday FPV drone designed to operate in conditions of radioactive contamination after a possible nuclear conflict.

This drone is a part of a larger “Crunch” radiation monitoring system designed to assess the level of environmental pollution after nuclear strikes.

“Contrary to the popular belief, an exchange of nuclear strikes will not lead to the instant death of everyone at once. On the contrary, most people on the planet are unlikely to notice that someone has used nuclear weapons somewhere.
But for weeks afterwards, the radioactive dust and ash would be scattering across the planet contaminating everyone and everything.

details not so obvious changes to policy.

Some of the new conditions appear to have been satisfied, and that means “it” can happen at any time.

Well, “When among a friendly population, and with plenty of local food, an island base is easier to hold, being prohibitively difficult to invade and take.” may be so, I suppose that not all islands are the same, Australia is said by some to be an island…size matters, as does character  and, ah, “position” (‘cuse the pun 😉 )…Iwo Jima being an example rather different from, say Catalina…and location. Madagascar may be worth the trouble. Of course local food is good, but I was thinking also of ammunition, etc.  There were in the Pacific Campaign those who said that taking certain islands was unnecessary…especially among the Marines who lived through the campaign. Okinawa, and Guam, on the other hand…and Tinian Island…  And the Soviets in the Kuril Island Campaign, of course.

Let us agree that it’s “expensive”, but sometimes worth the cost.

Diego Garcia and island bases generally. The Japanese Strategy of garrisoned islands turned almost overnight into a vast liability…as rapidly US fleet submarines sank shipping, the garrisons could not be supplied. It would have been even more rapid if the US torpedoes’ magnetic detonators had been perfected sooner. Islands are fat stationary targets. Modern missiles may eclipse the submarine method very substantially, missiles such as Oreshnik. Assuming EMP weapons, island bases may simply be de-energized and left to starve and to serve as lures the sub fleet can use to sink the relief ships, if any.

Not to disagree especially, but simply to recall that explosions of violence produce some degree of random or at least non-predictable outcomes.

You can be pretty sure the nukes will explode, but the details can bitechinndaazz, and violence produces a dynamic cascade of changes; not a single event. Well, maybe a .22 in the head can be treated as a single event, but it really isn’t. As it is, the die is cast…we’ll see what happens until we don’t…

The editorial decision to publish or not, and when, is always worth consideration….so? So why now?

see…Seeblockade gegen die Russische Föderation: Kommt Russlands Pearl-Harbor-Moment? — RT DE   url> https://rtde.rtde.world/meinung/258799-seeblockade-gegen-russische-foederation-kommt-russlands-pearl-harbor-moment/

    (my bold)

The working title of the essay, if I had written it, would be “any funny business with blockade and we’ll blow y’all to hell”

an essay the last para of which is:

trans> The plan for a complete lockdown of Russia clearly borders on criminal gamble. Russia is currently acting very defensively and will obviously avoid an escalation of the conflict. However, if the country is pushed too far into a corner, it could be driven to a desperate attempt to escape. Those in the values-based West who still possess a shred of common sense should absolutely try to prevent such a scenario. Unlike Japan, the Russian Federation is a nuclear power.

There is no “issue”respecting “southern Kuril Islands. iirc the issue was resolved in 1945 with the USSR agreeing not to take Hokkaido. Like the little Kraut kiddies in 1959, Her Excellency  Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi may be misinformed. If not, she’s lying. If, however, Japan were not a servile occupied Imperial Possession, but a sovereign State, then there could be, might be, a peace treaty. Let the PM kick out the occupation first. Okinawa might be a nice place to start… 😉

zone: Misinformed Americans… As the Disney movies rehabilitating von Braun did, so generally murkin folk born in the 40’s and 50’s  and 60’s etc…were and are under the impression that the post-war Germans, the west-germans anyway, were not pro Hitler, not “nazi” sympathetic.  This however is belied by current events as illustrated by compradorist “leaders” in Europe, and UK (!)

This short video is perhaps revealing…from 1959… (in Kraut but with english sub…)… The American TV would never show this, not then fersure! Instead the nazis were made out to have been comic figures as in “Hogan’s Heros”………https://youtu.be/_fAgkXQhHTg

When resolved to attack the function of “diplomacy” is to cloak intent and misdirect the enemy. iirc there were diplomatic activities between Germany and USSR right up to the last day – then Barbarossa rolled.
