I apologize for often being obscure. It is probably a reflection of my being chronically tormented by the inexplicable insanity of everything the US is now doing around the globe.

An Amphibious Ready Group can, if it is unopposed, and over the course of several hours, insert about 1500 lightly armed Marines into a limited theater of operations.

Venezuela is not North Korea or Iran, but they could still overwhelm an understrength light infantry brigade with sheer numbers.

The Marines would have highly vulnerable supply vectors, whereas Venezuela would have interior logistics at every point. They could almost certainly muster at least 15,000 reasonably well-trained and well-armed mobile troops to face a dismounted infantry assault with no meaningful backup.

Of course, people will immediately reply, “But US air power would beat them into submission in a matter of hours!”

Sure, sure.

An ARG can field, at most, a half-dozen antiquated Harriers, and a bunch of lumberingly slow rotary aircraft.

They would probably lose a couple V-22s to mechanical issues on their first sortie.

I would certainly not make the calculation that Venezuela does not have an inventory of at least 1000 MANPADs, many of them more capable than the antiquated US Stinger.

And, as I recall, they have long had a couple S-300VM battalions — maybe a dozen launchers, although I can’t say to what degree they are operational.

I do know the Russians have paid a lot of visits to Venezuela in the past year or two. Likewise the Chinese.

But some will then say, “Well, if we have to, we’ll launch B-2 strikes against them.”

Yeah, sure you will.

And you’ll take along your last half-dozen GBU-57 “Bunker Buster” bombs, and drop them on Maduro’s palace — as the Russians, Chinese, Iranians, and North Koreans laugh at your stupidity.

Actually, I think the whole thing is a ridiculous psyop. At least a moot discussion.

They have sent what is tantamount to a token force!

That can only mean they’re staging a parade; a meaningless bluff.

Will Trump ultimately launch a few dozen Tomahawk missiles at random stuff in order to snatch rhetorical victory from the jaws of strategic defeat? Yeah, probably.

But it would be utter madness and inexcusable incompetence to try to insert 1500 Marines into a highly urbanized area, in a necessarily piecemeal fashion, over the course of several hours, with almost negligible and relatively archaic air support, which would be highly susceptible to exactly the kind of point-defense systems the Venezuelans are likely to have in meaningful numbers.

I consider the entire notion of a small brigade US Marine raid into Venezuela to be silly talk.

In the very first hours [of the war], 2 of our residential complexes were attacked. Five organizational blocks in the Shahid Chamran and Shahid Rajai complexes were hit, destroying nearly 40 residential units in 1 strike—28 of them completely leveled.

Soldiers at the front and retirees at home needed their wages, but payments were blocked. Families needed to survive, but access to their accounts was cut off. Under these conditions, the Ministry of Defense intervened with measures I won’t detail here, but they neutralized the effects of the cyberattack.

Throughout those 12 days, we ensured full logistical and supply support: food, essentials, and all material needs of the armed forces and their families were provided without interruption.

Despite missile strikes targeting our residential complexes, my own office, and other infrastructure, production continued. Not once did weapons deliveries or logistical supplies stop—not for a second.

This is part of the Ministry of Defense’s mission: It is not only a defense industry but also tied to the economic sector. In fact, you could say it functions almost like a government on its own.

We oversee nearly 60 civilian and non-defense industries through the Armed Forces Pension Fund, which uses them to pay pensions. It is, therefore, a vast ministry with a wide range of industries and responsibilities.

We have not yet used this missile technology in the 12-day war, even without using them, we still overwhelmed their defenses. To put it this way: Had the war gone from 12 days to 15, in those last 3 days they probably would not have been able to defend against any missiles at all.

Air defense is not easy — it’s not like firing a rifle in bursts. Defenses like THAAD and Patriot are multilayered & complex, and intercepting a missile isn’t simple.

Each launch consumes expensive missiles, and reloading those systems takes time. For every single warhead, they need to fire multiple THAAD or Patriot interceptors — which is neither easy nor sustainable.

That’s why continuing the war would have been to their disadvantage, and why they ultimately requested a ceasefire.

Antioquia: A police Black Hawk helicopter on a coca eradication mission was shot down by an explosives-laden drone, killing 12 officers and wounding seven—the first such drone attack in the region. Ground crews also came under mortar and gunfire.

Cali: A truck bomb exploded outside an Air Force base, killing six civilians (including a child) and injuring 71, damaging nearby businesses.

In total, at least 18 people died.

President Petro blamed the attacks on the FARC’s 36th Dissident Front, describing the acts as terrorist acts linked to groups rejecting the 2016 peace agreement.

The violence raises fears of a return to Colombia’s turbulent past.
