This is facile nonsense, in my view.
The conclusion that Putin was ever once deceived by western treachery is so manifestly false.
Oh, sure, Putin has frequently played up the “we were deceived” line as a rhetorical device. But everything Russia actually did over the course of the past two decades+ was in urgent preparation to restore its military, its economy, and strengthen its global diplomatic prestige.
Putin’s Russia was absolutely not ready to face NATO in 2014.
And yet, with extreme boldness, Putin managed to reclaim Crimea, reinforce the Donbass against attack, and buy time for Russia to better prepare.
They were still not fully prepared in February 2022, but managed their affairs remarkably well, all things considered. By July they had severely attrited the original version of the AFU, and have since then comprehensively destroyed two NATO/AFU hybrid armies.
Every substantive statement from Putin from the beginning of this war to the present day makes clear that the minimum objectives are those he laid out on February 21, 2022: the most significant of which is the demand that NATO military presence be rolled back to its pre-1997 borders.
This has been explicitly and repeatedly reaffirmed.
But these things must be done delicately.
Winning an existential struggle against a crumbling empire whilst still avoiding the scenario of many of the great cities of the world being turned to ashes and rubble … well, it’s a very dicey business.
You can’t just “gird up your loins” and charge in with guns blazing.
We’re living through the most complex collection of geopolitical dynamics in all of human history.
There is immense risk and unpredictability at work.
In my view, as I attempt to analyze the aggregate of considerations — both in Eastern Europe and around the globe — Russia, China, and Iran are clearly attempting to somehow cooperate to roll back Anglo-American hegemony, while yet avoiding nuclear war.
And the events in Kursk over the past few days absolutely pale in significance in the broader picture of the current perplexities of the nations.
The desperate raid-in-force in Kursk was destined from its outset to culminate in abysmal failure, and consequently the moment of collapse of the entire line of contact has now been greatly hastened.
How can you people not see and understand that, regardless of any fault to be found in minute details, the overall Russian strategy — dating back to the beginning of Putin’s reign — has been characterized by historically rare strategic wisdom and necessary prudence?
