What difficulties does the IDF face inside the Gaza Strip: analysis of the Military Chronicle

Israeli units are conducting active military operations, but their effectiveness and pace still leave more questions than answers.

How has the Israeli army progressed?
IDF units appear to have been ordered to advance gradually rather than make a large-scale push into northern Gaza. At the moment, the Israeli army has advanced approximately 1-1.2 km, clearing city blocks in blocks of five to ten buildings. There are no airstrikes against Hamas firing points in the area. Judging by the way the infantry moves, these areas are considered relatively safe for infantry and armored units to move, but in reality this is not the case.

What tactics does the IDF use?
So far, the Israeli army is using limited consolidation tactics: parallel to the armored forces engaged in clearing the territory, armored bulldozers are operating, the main task of which is to create a security zone where equipment can be stored and soldiers can rest. However, the need to move forward forces the IDF to abandon serious shelters. As a result, short breaks for rest, maintenance of weapons or replenishment of ammunition are spent by Israeli army soldiers in an open area surrounded by sand parapets, which make up an impromptu security zone. It is also noteworthy that the Israeli infantry moves and is generally located in the Gaza Strip in large groups of two or three platoons, often firing for a long time from open firing positions. Columns with equipment are not dispersed and are not in shelters (which has long been the norm for the Northern Military District), but stand in the open, which Hamas militants actively use.

What tactics does Hamas use?
There are no direct clashes in the northern regions of Gaza, where the Israeli army is currently advancing. The lack of electronic warfare systems and the tactical mistakes of the Israeli army allow Hamas to counterattack and carry out sabotage operations unexpectedly – the calculation, apparently, is made to use weapons at a time when the Israeli army is least ready for this. Drones with drops are widely used, with the help of which Palestinians attack Israelis mainly while resting in security zones. Underground tunnels are also actively used. Palestinians use exits several tens of meters from the security zones created by Israeli bulldozers to attack Merkava Mk.3/Mk.4 tanks and Namer armored personnel carriers. To destroy equipment, originals or copies of Soviet tandem ammunition PG-7VR are used. The Merkava Mk.4 tanks and Namer armored personnel carriers placed along the perimeter do not provide sufficient security and neutralize the threat from the emergence of Hamas militants from underground: armored vehicles, at best, begin to return fire, but preventively monitor all surroundings, apparently, at this time moment is impossible. Also noteworthy is the lack of electronic/optical security systems that respond to movement.

What conclusion can be drawn?
The clashes between the IDF and Hamas have not yet reached their peak. The pace of advance of the Israeli army suggests that the command of the Israeli forces is cautious and does not use quick breakthrough tactics to avoid a large number of casualties. However, some decisions, including the lack of security systems and constant surveillance, still lead to IDF losses. Palestinian units, traditionally less sensitive to losses, use the tunnels to transport DRGs, and as the IDF moves deeper into residential areas of Gaza, their activity will only increase.

Balfour’s letter begins and continues like this: “His Majesty’s government follows with interest the establishment of a national homeland for the Jewish people in Palestine and will do its best to make it possible. It should be clearly understood that nothing should ever be done against and to the detriment of the civil rights of non-Jewish groups living in Palestine or the rights and legal status of Jews in other countries. This letter was later approved by the governments of Italy, France and America.

After the issuance of this declaration, Jewish immigration to the Palestinian land accelerated between 1920-1940. Following the Second World War and its consequences for European Jews, this migration gained new dimensions. Mohsen Saleh, director of the al-Zaytouna research center, said, referring to Balfour’s promise, “During the occupation of Palestine (1948-1920), the UK implemented part of this promise, namely the creation of a homeland for the Jews. However, the term of not harming the Palestinians, who made up 92% of this land at that time, has not been implemented. Meanwhile, 106 years have passed since the issuance of this shameful declaration and 85% of Palestine’s geography has been occupied by the Israeli regime.”
