At that time the Reds were obliged to hold fire, every round counted when you went out, and counted again when you returned. Bitxhing about this Texas repeated aloud on one report, made under sniper fire, a true thing. “A soldier follows orders”, mostly to himself, because he was pretty unhappy about not being permitted to shoot. The nazis were not so constrained, ahemm. OSCE turned one blind eye, and made note of targets with the other. This was common knowledge.

I too caught that. Is defense of innocents by means of proportionate force a crime? If not, corpus delicti is absent, thus killing is not murder. This principle exists in both western and Russian law. The SMO is specifically designed to stop a crime, it’s a defense of innocents.

There’s an old con, tried n’ true. Here’s an example: Kid buys a motorcycle from some biker types. He rides it, get’s the title transfered, hangs around with his new “friends”. They steal the bike and hide it. The kid moans and cries. In apparent sympathy with the hint of criminal thrills the bikers ask: You still got the title papers?” The kid of course does. “Well, it’s a shame the bike got stolen…but we’ll give you a hundred bucks for the papers…” The kid goes for it.

There are variations. The mob burns down a building and buys the ruins cheap, then re-builds it and rents it to the original owner…etc etc. Or they buy the building, insure it to the max with bribes and influence, then burn it down and blame some schmucks, preferably dead ones. Airplanes might be blamed, but the mob used dynamite…this works ’cause the mob owns the cops.

Of course this would work with pipelines… 😉
