Makes sense to me. From memory, an’ ahem no chemist… Mg hydride thermal-shock rapid decomposition via, I guess RDX or similar for trigger. The H would be released as atomic hydrogen and some would reform to H2 thence with ambient O2 to H2O as steam while other H would combine with almost anything…all in a cascade releasing a great deal of heat. Simultaneously the Mg would combine mostly with ambient O2, releasing a large amount of heat. Actually ahbetcha the Mg would decompose some of the steam to get the O2 it “wants”, re-releasing H to re-join the cascade. Hydride rapid decomposition is considered a hazard in the storage of H, iirc. Mg burn hot&nice! H make nice bang. So long as the ‘speriment was pretty far away I’d love to see it done. Actually, I think, Mg hydride is pretty easy to make, but it might take a lot of pressure and really clean materials, hydrides “poison” pretty easily iirc. I believe hydrides can form in most metals. The new explosive, if that’s to be an application, makes a chemical riot. I suppose you tube fellas (there are some real chemists on YT) will be making their demonstrations pretty soon. I look forward to that.

A really special demo would be one where the Mg hydride was pressed softly into a sphere and an implosion lens formed of RDX and Baratol around it in the classical atom-bomb scheme…the shock wave might give us a real treat. Nothing nuclear about it but I wonder what the extreme pressures might do.

I also wonder if thermal decomposition threshold would be crossed by an exploding bridgewire alone. Or even a primer from a rifle cartridge.

This stuff has no more to do with nuclear bombs than does making beer. The story has an alarmist aspect. Cool stuff though…

I think the engineers were worried about accidental explosions and wanted to see how dangerous the hydrogen storage scheme was. Hydride storage (not in Mg but in other metals and I think mixtures of metals), has been used experimentally in automobiles that burn H2 as motorfuel. iirc it’s necessary to keep it under some pressure to keep things stable.  That’s all I have, and that from recollections.
