My favorite zamel song of this war from Ansarallah was in multiple Yemeni dialects, so for fun, I took my time trying to decipher and translate it.
This is the closest translation I could come up with. pic.twitter.com/OYKNtijrbF

It had OVER 2 Million Barrels of Oil on Board
There are SO MANY ships getting hit that even UKMTO can not keep up. Also, Trump said WEEKS AGO that all the mines are gone. ANOTHER LIE? pic.twitter.com/yo3Qm1E62L

There were reports the container ship Iran blew up the other day left iPhones and iPads floating in the water, and Iranians were gathering them. Couldn’t confirm the reports. But this does seem to be confirmation it was true…

KeymasterThe proposed Chinese tech export ban has been THE big topic of conversation in groups I follow discussing running AI locally. Chinese open models are the only competition for frontier competition with the large American closed labs. Basically I have already accepted that what is available now might be the best I’m able to run in the future on my local hardware. We shall see. Don’t know what to make of this coming so quickly on the heels of Xi Jinping’s visit to the USA, but at first glance if this goes through it would seem to benefit the US models with less competition (while also agreeing with the “alignment” propaganda).
My personal (conspiracy?) theory is that we are at or near peak AI/LLM development already. I’ve seen the recent moves from American labs as evidence of this. See also the move down in AI tech stocks, the inability for Open AI and Anthropic to IPO. And now we have China potentially shutting the door to releasing new models as well. I would not be surprised if China has decided the tech has peaked, and future moves related to streamlining, compressing, and improving the way LLMs work should be kept in-house and not open-sourced. If I’m right, this news isn’t that bad for the local AI community.

KeymasterOn the Telegram data disclosure – What is reported is a little hysterical. Telegram has to comply with local law. So, this is their policy:
• Private chat contents (standard cloud chats and end-to-end encrypted “Secret Chats” are generally not handed over as part of these routine data disclosures, though Telegram’s standard chats are client-server encrypted rather than end-to-end encrypted by default).
Conditions for Disclosure
• Telegram reviews requests to ensure they are valid legal orders from relevant judicial authorities (such as court orders under the U.S. Stored Communications Act or European legal frameworks).
• The user must be a confirmed suspect in a case involving criminal activities that violate Telegram’s Terms of Service. So, what is Telegram to do? What is the alternative if faced with a valid court order? I don’t see any. They cannot tell all of the courts in all of the lands to sod off.
Russia back in the day wanted all the data, chats as well from any Ukrainian – a mass data disclosure. That is why Durov left Russia and is why Russia is still red-hot angry with him. Telegram refused that request, and slowly it started combining a legal request with what is in Telegram’s ToS.
Durov explains the sequence currently: Over the last two years, we have seen a pattern emerge in multiple countries: Telegram is quietly pressured to grant political favors — such as illegal censorship or surveillance. When we refuse, local media and “non-governmental” organizations launch orchestrated campaigns portraying Telegram as a cesspool of crime, from child pornography to terrorism.
Our moderation is no worse than that of other major platforms. Yet these campaigns instill the idea that Telegram should be persecuted or restricted.
Suddenly, officials start caring about crime and protecting children — but only on platforms that reject their secret political demands. Platforms that accept such deals get away with almost anything — including literally selling ads promoting child pornography.
I still cannot see alternatives for Telegram. They’ve been holding out a long time and what they have to give, they give drip by drip if the data requested violates their own Terms of Service. How honest the process is, I cannot comment on of course. We don’t know. There is two sides of this story and those that regularly complain, have no alternative and follow the media that wants to kill Telegram – because it is titillating stuff.
Russia in my view mismanaged this thing and because of this, lost the technology. Now, they have to rebuild technology and from what I see, I struggle these days to post up quite a bit of Russian data, as they are going their own way. Now they have Max – years behind Telegram, even with TG’s generally clunky interface.

KeymasterI hear you. Twitter doesn’t have my phone number, but Telegram does. I get concerned about that. It’s a pretty valuable piece of personal information that I would prefer not to give up. My ip can come from a VPN. The phone number is tied directly to me.

KeymasterYup. These phone numbers are not good as a personal identifier. I’m used to it but not a good thing. Where I am, cannot even buy groceries without giving my phone number and then they send me ads, targeted to what I bought or what they think I would buy. They use my whole buying history to make up buy lists for when they think I’ll get there again. Obscene targeting .. but it is the closest supermarket.

Mr P
ParticipantIn Anoxia the Harbor Freight store will not honor their guarantee unless one provides “a phone number”…. sooooo… in 1954 I memorized my first phone number…that of my grandmother. It was 7 digits. I gave them that number. I was surprised though, because almost immediately after they typed it into their computer they refused to accept it, and said that’s not a “good number”. Thus I learned that there is a master list of “good numbers”…or maybe a list of “bad numbers”….or some sort of algorithm… Veerrryinteristink, eh?
