Population of AzerbaijanHi emerson, i do not know most of the story regarding Azerbaijan, but suspect the affair begins and ends with the British. They likely served as conduit to the israelis. And for a while, Israeli arms had an unearned reputation as superior, and were welcomed for practical reasons. Both the British and their local rottweiler always saw Transcaucasia as the northern staging ground to assault Iran and the southern beachhead to cut off Russia from landroutes to Iran and West Asia.
As with India, Nigeria, Ghana, Kenya, and most of the Anglophone former British Empire territories, small insecure Azerbaijan after the implosion of the USSR in 1991 somehow became networked and connected to the British realm. However both former Soviet States benefited from prudent factions of their elites, trained in Russia, speaking Russian, maintaining old relations, and keeping doors open to Moscow too. The Aliyev family is close to Putin. They are smart. They know they cannot take on BOTH Iran and Russia (or either alone), as they are being set up to do by the crazed West. The West LACKS logistics so far away in Transcaucasia, especially after having lost the Ukraine war and control of the Black Sea. Control of the Black Sea and Georgia, and diminution of Russia was a prerequisite of advance into Transcaucasia and Central Asia. This is now gone forever.
Iran also has significant hooks in Azerbaijan too — I think most Azeris actually live in the northern provinces of Iran, called by the eponymous name; much of Iranian elite have same Turkic background, with the current supreme leader Khamenei speaking Azeri too. Both are also the only two majority Shiite nations on earth! (albeit Azeris are quite secular) It is as with China and its “little brothers” in ASEAN — Azerbaijan cannot flout the will of Iran.
Erdogan has played a constructive role here too — his pan-Turkic alliance, ostensibly arranged by MI-6 to attack the Heartland and sever connections with both Russia and China, now works to stabilize in the face of madness by Armenian compradore elites. The open and lasting enemity of the Turks is sufficient for them in West Asia — Erdogan promised defeat to the unjust yesterday! The stabilization of Transcaucasia is a first fruit, arranged in consultations between the Azeris, Turks, Iranians, and Russians — in that order of importance. Armenia had opposed such a corridor, fearing having to make further territorial concessions after Azerbaijan seized the contested region of Nagorno-Karabakh in a lightning offensive in September.
Although internationally viewed as Azeri territory, Karabakh had been controlled by ethnic Armenians since the fall of the Soviet Union in the 1990s. The Azeri offensive prompted almost all the region’s 120,000 ethnic Armenians to flee into Armenia.
Azerbaijan had in recent weeks called for its longstanding request for a transport corridor through southern Armenia to be included in ongoing talks on a peace treaty aimed at ending three decades of conflict between Baku and Yerevan.
