⭕ The Houthis, whose official name is “Ansar Allah” or Supporters of God [in English], is a fairly protean and heterogeneous movement united around a few fairly consensual political points since they tend to incorporate other movements aspiring to represent the Yemeni populations and want to transcend all political and ideological divisions. The movement has a right wing, centrists and a left wing and each of its currents is represented by a separate political faction but united around the “front against aggression” after the war led by the international coalition under Saudi cover against Yemen. The movement ceased to be considered a rebel group in 2014 when it was one of the signatories to the Charter of Peace and National Partnership under the auspices of the United Nations. Before the signing of the Charter, the group had been confined in the mountains of Saada where it had fought the government of Ali Abdallah Salah six consecutive times. In September 2014, the group entered Sanaa to overthrow the government and on this occasion more than 60% of the Yemeni armed forces rallied to its cause, allowing Ansar Allah to get its hands on large stocks of weapons heavy weapons and missiles.
⭕ There are currently two rival governments in Yemen. One based in Sanaa [Ansar Allah] and the other based in Aden [GCC-western stooge]. Only the southern [Aden] government is recognized by the “international community” (Washington and its allies) but the Aden government is incapable of imposing its authority beyond a few blocks inside Aden and its members, head of government and all the ministers, are not in Yemen but exercise their “power” from the very luxurious Ritz Carlton in Riyadh in Saudi Arabia since February 2015. This government supported by Riyadh has the loyalty of Warlords and southern tribal leaders in return for large remunerations in US dollars and this is how the Aden government can claim the support of 10 to 15% of the population. This support is naturally conditioned by the funds generously provided by other Gulf countries.
⭕ What is useful to remember is that the Houthis are members of the National Salvation Government and were able to exploit the resentment of a large part of the population after the deadly raids of the international coalition under Arab cover (in which all Western and pro-US Arabs countries participated) and the famine that followed while politicians live in luxury in Riyadh. The Houthis found themselves exercising de facto power over a large part of the country, including in areas where they were not popular.
⭕ The Yemeni armed forces that are launching ballistic missiles and kamikaze drones against Israel are not, strictly speaking, the Houthis. It was the armed forces of the former Yemen unified in 1994 who joined the National Salvation government sitting in Sanaa and whose mandate is validated by a parliament. These forces claim to represent all of Yemen and consider themselves the country’s only regular army. This army does not recognize the government of Aden supported by Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates and this is the main point they share with the Houthis. [VIP to keep in mind.
