According to Yedioth Ahronoth, Palestinian Hamas is particularly insistent on the release of high-ranking prisoners transcending internal Palestinian political and partisan affiliations. Hamas demands the release of three famous detainees from Fatah (the party of President Mahmoud Abbas), the Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine and Hamas.

Marwan Al-Barghouti (center) has been a member of Fatah since 1974 and is considered one of the initiators of the first and second intifadas or stone revolts.
