⭕ 🇷🇺🇳🇪 Yunus-bek Evkurov’s visit to Niamey last December continues to bear fruit: the European Council decided not to renew the mandate of the EUMPM mission in Niger.
🔸️The European Council decided yesterday not to extend the EU Military Partnership Mission in Niger (EUMPM Niger) beyond June 30, 2024, given the “current serious political situation” in the country, Italian news agency Nova reported, citing an EU statement.
🔸️The mission was created in December 2022 at the request of the former Niger authorities to improve the ability of the local armed forces to contain the terrorist threat. The original agreed period was three years. When former President Muhammad Bazoum was overthrown by a military coup on July 26, 2023, and the National Council for the Defense of the Homeland (SNSP) came to power, the EU sharply condemned the coup and began introducing restrictive measures against Niger.
🔸️On December 4, 2023, the Niger Military Council announced the termination of the agreement establishing the legal basis for the deployment of the EUMPM mission, as well as the EU civilian mission EUCAP Sahel Niger, which had deployed police forces in Niger since 2012, after which the EU began to gradually transfer its personnel from Niger to Europe. 🔸️Ouattara pointed out that the Alliance has become more effective in the fight against terrorism since it left the G5 Sahel and began to rely on its own strength and funding.
