Today the New York Times came out and admitted I’ve been right all along.⬇️

Specifically, the NYT disclosed that the Russians have hit and sunk or damaged 22 ships in and around Ukrainian ports in the Black Sea in the last three months. Now, of course the NYT elided the real story in favor of a nonsense narrative about grain exports* – these strikes have been explicitly reported in the Russian information space as targeted against either vessels shipping in munitions for Ukraine or AFU Q-ships. The fact that Western war insurance rates for Black Sea shipping have only risen modestly to around a 1% charge in this period – indicating that insurers believe there is only risk of accidental attacks against shipping on legitimate business, rather than that the Russians are blowing up anything that floats as they quite easily could – shows that the voenkors are correct. Presumably NATO is covering losses on arms shipments under the table.

* If the Russians wanted to shut down grain exports they would destroy the shipment terminals and mine the coastline to simply prevent access to cargo ships. They haven’t done this despite ample capability to do so; ergo this isn’t their objective. Moreover, the broenkors – who near-universally believe that Putin has been far too soft with Ukraine and that harsh measures are warranted – would be ecstatic at such a development and would report it heavily. They haven’t even hinted at Russian intent to do this.

This development also debunks the theory that Ukraine has any real capability to target Russian commercial shipping, and that they had very uncharacteristically refrained from doing so in return for the Russians leaving Ukraine-bound traffic alone. The Russians have been striking those ships for months now with zero effective retaliation from Ukraine. The only conclusion that can be drawn is that Ukrainian capability simply does not exist. Presumably at this point the Black Sea Fleet has successfully confined AFU/GUR maritime activity to transient sorties off the Ukrainian coast, well away from the main shipping lanes.

So, in short and as I have been saying for a very long time now, the Black Sea is Putin’s bathtub.

If you recall at Kursk there were many hiccups eminating from the “Highest” levels of the German command structure which led to that attack being delayed, the Brits passed along the plans via Enigma, and the attack was ultimately telegraphed (it was launched months late). Further, Von Manstein wanted to press on and finish his attack as he knew what would happen if he failed to smash the Russian reserves built up around Kursk, but was once again overruled from on High.

However, I do look at that conflict as a clash between modern maneuver warfare (which was born out of WWI and an interesting argument is that it was an adaptation born of desperation, as many German tactics prevalent in WWII were present as early as 1917) and modern-ish attrition warfare. Ultimately, attrition warfare has the edge, particularly as wars drag on.

Fundamentally, maneuver is far more complex and at a baseline it requires highly trained troops and a seasoned NCO and officer corps. This takes significant time to develop and long training timelines. While initially it provides significant advantages on the battlefield, on a long enough arc it can be wiped out, as happened in WWII.
