Venezuela : Under siege
The Venezuelan people are slowly recovering after the massive two earthquakes and are already out in the streets. It is time to stand in solidarity with Venezuela, and not rejoice in their new colonization. Venezuela is under colonial siege. Prof Wolff talks about the subordination of feudalism, because of the greased wheel that colonialism provides.
Colonialism now runs against the trends of the post- and anti-colonial period of modern history that we have entered. We can also call it the call of multipolarity. Prof Wolff states: “Asia, Africa, and Latin America are not willing to play the game anymore. To try to be a colonial power now makes you either ridiculous, that’s Mr. Trump fantasizing about Greenland, or genocidal, that’s Israel actually trying to develop a settler colonialism in Gaza three centuries later. That’s not doable anymore, because the world has changed.”
Yet, Venezuela has just been colonialized as part of what the hegemonic power calls “Our Hemisphere”. and their ‘greased wheel’ is Israel. We need to be in solidarity with Venezuela and not blame them for their state. Here is what is happening and details are mostly from Venezuelanalysis. You will find countries that you would have thought would know better, taking part in what is fast becoming a Rape of Venezuela. Starkly, announcement after announcement, you will find the deep roots of colonialism, with the colonial master using the old old canard: Yes, of course the oppressor is “helping the poor people”.
Another agricultural sector is denouncing uncontrolled imports ruining national production. Agroindustrial corporations have been expanding this practice in sectors like rice, corn, and sugar to drive down crop prices, especially from small-scale producers
Tax collection streamlined. Under new leadership, Venezuela’s tax authority (SENIAT) is introducing a series of measures to remove bureaucratic hurdles and digitalize procedures as much as possible. Authorities want to crack down on tax evasion as well
Another energy major making plans. India’s state-owned ONGC has reportedly received a license from the US Treasury Department and is looking to jumpstart two projects in Venezuela as well as collect outstanding debt
Another vulture. BP has reportedly joined Vitol and Trafigura as companies that take Venezuelan oil and then resell it. Recall that Venezuela does not receive payment for crude exports. It’s deposited in a US Treasury account before the imperial overlords decide when and how much of it should be returned to Caracas
Venezuela’s UK-Held Gold to Be Released to US Control, Foreign Audits The reserves, worth over $4 billion, will be deposited in a US Treasury account before eventual disbursement to support post-earthquake recovery. Opposition delegate Ramón López said the gold would be deposited in a US Treasury account and audited by international firms, with funds directed toward housing and healthcare projects for families affected by the June 24 earthquake.
Venezuelan judicial authorities issued “alternative measures” (i.e. release or probation) to 131 prisoners serving sentences or undergoing trial. Though not framed as such, this is clearly a result of the ongoing US-backed dialogue w/ an opposition faction
BP is also set to explore Venezuela’s Carúpano East block, while Shell is developing Loran’s first phase and has secured the Dragon field. The deals expand the role of international energy companies in Venezuela’s offshore gas sector.
Next step: destroying Chávez’s 2001 Land Law? An opposition party is already putting a proposal forward w/ a motto that says it all: “a country of property owners, not occupiers.” The landowning elites are salivating at the prospect of undoing this major pillar of the revolution
Venezuela has granted BP, UAE-based XRG and Qatar’s UCC a concession to drill the second phase of the Loran offshore gas field, estimated at 4 Tcf. PDVSA is not a stakeholder in the consortium.
The US has charged Venezuela $4.7 billion, or 32% of oil exports so far this year, for the cost of invading it, according to a government commission member. By comparison, between 1924 and 1931, Germany paid 13% of its exports in reparations to the Allies.
Slowly the people are standing up. But, they are still dealing with earthquake damage and trying to come to terms with being taken into colonialist siege. Three protests in Caracas in two weeks have opposed US intervention, defended Venezuela’s sovereignty and natural resources, and voiced support for Palestine and opposition to economic reforms seen as favoring foreign corporations.
We see already that India and Qatar and UAE based conglomerates are keen to share in the dismantling of Venezuela and taking tribute while impoverishing the people as serfs. These few examples that I chose, are text-book colonialism. But slowly we see the people stand up. This time they stand against weapons. One of the most peaceful concepts standing as an example to the world is now demolished. CELAC and most of the nations declared the LAC as a Zone of Peace. LULA from Brazil has just announced that 2.5% of GDP of Brazil will be used to acquire weapons and stand up an army.
The Venezuelan Movement in Solidarity w/ Palestine Al Awda issued a statement rejecting "normalization w/ the genocidal state of Israel"
"We reject the use of 'cooperation' rhetoric to cover for barbarity and apartheid.Diplomacy cannot serve to whitewash crimes against humanity" https://t.co/0coxPusAVX
