Putin’s Kuril visit sends shockwaves through Japan

Imagine being Japan … and finding Pres. Putin on what you think is your islands.  

Japanese officials have fired back with a “firm protest,” with its Foreign Ministry condemning the Russian President’s first trip to the Kuril islands as a blatant “violation of territorial integrity.”

💬 “I learned from reports today that President Putin has arrived on Iturup island. The four northern islands, including Iturup, are historically and under international law an inalienable part of our national territory. Japan registers its strongest protest against this visit,” Foreign Minister Toshimitsu Motegi declared via socialmedia.

Japan brands the islands the “Northern Territories” or “Four Northern Islands.” Russia, however, insists the Southern Kurils were legally absorbed into Soviet Union after World War II, and that its sovereignty there is ironclad.

Putin has acknowledged Japan’s territorial claims, but maintains that the matter is already settled in black-and-white international law: the Kurils are Russian territory.
