Xi Jinping announced creation of World AI Cooperation Organization

This happened just a few hours ago in Shanghai : To my reckoning the first real organization that is created in the time of “the New World with a shared future”, for a new technology and with a new set of objectives. This technology will shape our world and touch each aspect of all our lives into the future.  This is a World’s First in all of its aspects.  (Who needs passé organisations from the old world like the old broken World Trade Oranisation?)

Quote – Xi Jinping: Xi Jinping warns AI developers against eroding the world’s cultural diversity. ‘We should tend to the garden of civilizations with great care to ensure that the beauty of each civilization is appreciated and shared’

The WAICO (World Artificial Intelligence Cooperation Organization” will be an independent intergovernmental international organization headquartered in Shanghai. Objectives are promotion of international cooperation and global governance on AI, ensuring that AI is beneficial, safe and fair, thereby promoting its healthy and orderly development to benefit all humanity. The organization will uphold the purposes of the UN Charter, be committed to extensive consultation and joint contribution for shared benefit and adhere to a people-centered approach, according to the agreement.

Twenty-nine countries such as Kazakstan, Laos, Russia and Indonesia signed on as founding members. This includes 10 African countries. Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi, who is also a member of the Political Bureau of the Communist Party of China Central Committee, signed the agreement on behalf of the Chinese government.

The United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres was among representatives from countries and international organizations present at the signing ceremony. (He is fast becoming passé).

This year’s conference will be held from July 17th to 20th. Chinese President Xi Jinping delivered his first keynote at the World AI Conference in Shanghai on Friday, setting out China’s position on artificial intelligence as the country scales policy support for the sector. In his opening address, Xi outlined key priorities (https://www.scmp.com/tech/tech-war/article/3360870/top-takeaways-xi-jinpings-opening-address-world-ai-conference-shanghai) at the first summit, marking his first direct speech at China’s flagship AI event.

Xi Jinping’s speech happened just moments after his US counterpart, Donald Trump, delivered an unprecedented attack against Beijing during a prime-time national broadcast, accusing China of orchestrating the “largest compromise of election data in history”.

The dueling addresses are set to further fuel escalating geopolitical and technology tensions between the two rival powers.

The appearance comes as AI has become a central arena in US-China technology competition and as Beijing increases focus on domestic innovation capacity. A presidential-level address at WAIC elevates the conference’s political weight and signals that AI remains a strategic policy priority for China’s leadership.

The speech also places Shanghai more firmly at the center of China’s AI policy messaging and industry coordination. Further measures will likely be tracked through follow-up announcements tied to the conference.

I feel positive about this. It is an organization that is set up for our times and with a clear and marked objective in the Chinese style, All Must Benefit.

RT published a good article on this occasion: The other AI superpower: How Russia and China are building an alternative to Silicon Valley. “From healthcare to education, a new model of technological development aims to put everyday users – not monopolies – first”
