BRICS ‘UP & RUNNING’: How India Will Navigate US-Iran Conflict & Tensions With Trump—C. Uday Bhaskar
Commodore C. Uday Bhaskar: Why did BRICS Not Publicly Criticise the US’ War on Iran?
‘The meeting of the National Security Advisers seems to have arrived at a consensus that they would not use the forum to make any statements that were critical of the United States and what has happened in recent months in West Asia.
There was no joint statement after the eleven countries met, which is indicative of the fact that there are clearly very divergent opinions and views about the major global security issues. Therefore, to prevent any kind of what you might call public discord about these issues, BRICS agreed that they would focus on the second tier of global security, where terrorism and related issues are major concerns.
We had the UAE and Iran in the same room would give you an idea about the different positions that these countries bring to the table. So therefore, I think making any public statement about the United States would have been perhaps counterproductive, because most of these decisions and statements are also in the run-up to the summit that India would host in September.
There would have been a fair amount of private discussions, particularly when Prime Minister Modi met with these officials when they were in Delhi. And I’m sure that they would take back whatever is required to be addressed at the summit level.’
