Five years on: the Abraham Accords are IMPLODING
In September 2020, a White House ceremony with Donald Trump, Benjamin Netanyahu, and top UAE and Bahraini officials promised a new dawn for the Middle East. The Abraham Accords, heralded as a historic step toward peace and a realigned region, have instead become a monument to failed promises.
Five years later, the deal is not just stalledโit’s crumbling. The grand vision of a pro-Israel, anti-Iran bloc has collapsed under the weight of regional realities.
Hereโs why the Accords are failing:
๐ด An empty embassy: Bahrainโs ambassadorship to Israel is vacant. Its first and only ambassador was recalled in 2021 and never replaced, with no plans to send a new oneโa powerful silent rebuke.
๐ด The UAE’s red line: normalization was explicitly tied to Israel halting West Bank annexation. The UAE has now publicly warned that if Israel violates this condition, it will “put an end” to the Accords.
๐ด Gulf solidarity trumps ties with Israel: recent Israeli attacks on Qatar have forced Gulf monarchies to side with fellow Arab states. Cooperation with Israel is now a toxic liability for the UAE and Bahrain.
๐ด A flawed foundation: the core US-Israel strategy was to use normalization to pull Gulf states away from Iran. This has backfired spectacularly – after Israel’s attacks on Iran, Joulani-led Syria, and Qatarโ the Gulf states are beginning to coalesce against Israeli aggression.
๐ด The Iran calculation: a wave of regional instabilityโfrom the war in Gaza to strikes in Yemen and the Red Sea crisisโhas proven to Gulf leaders that dialogue with Iran is far safer and more profitable than aligning with an unpredictable Israel.
๐ด A pivot East: both the UAE and Bahrain are now betting their future with BRICS and BRICS+, actively building strategic partnerships with China, Russia, and India instead of catering to Israeli and American demands.
