” NEW: US Central Command’s (CENTCOM) withdrawal from key bases in Syria illustrates that the United States is gradually shifting its counter-Islamic State in Iraq and al Sham (ISIS) framework to engage with the Syrian government rather than the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF). CENTCOM confirmed on February 11 that US forces completed their withdrawal from al Tanf Garrison in the central Syrian desert as part of a “deliberate and conditions-based transition.” Syrian government forces backfilled the United States at the base. The Syrian government has the tools to be an effective US counter-ISIS partner in Syria, but will face temporary constraints as it integrates the SDF and northeastern Syria into the state.
Al Hol IDP Camp: European media reported on February 12 that the third-country national annex at al Hol internally displaced persons (IDP) camp is nearly empty. ISIS-affiliated families have reportedly escaped from al Hol camp to other Syrian provinces and Lebanon.
