In most cases, a small wave of 3-5 Iranian ballistic missiles is enough to prompt the launch of about 10-15 Israeli interceptor missiles, with each one costing at least $12 million dollars (in the case of THAAD).

In contrast, even Iran’s most modern missile, the Fattah-1, only costs about $200,000 to produce, according to the IRGC. If we assume 12 interceptors for one Fattah-1 missile (as seen in a video today), that means Israel is spending $144 million dollars to ‘intercept’ (not always successfully) a single Iranian hypersonic missile.

This is simply not sustainable. Within about two weeks, if Iran keeps up the current pace of fire, Israeli airspace will be at the mercy of Iran’s far larger and more destructive solid fuel bsllistic missiles. Unless, of course, the U.S. intervenes directly.

The Russians have 2.4 million under arms right now with 60% activated. Russian population is 145 million.

For plenty of reasons, the Finns cannot put 20% of their people in the armed forces.

1. Iran still likely possesses thousands of drones that can reach Israel and thousands of shorter-range missiles that can target U.S. bases and other countries in the region. In addition, Iran still possesses cruise missiles that – as far as I can tell – haven’t been used yet (but were last year’s attacks).

2. As the war continues, Iran will learn more about the weaknesses of the Israeli missile defense system which will enable their barrages to become more effective. I think the reason why last night’s barrages seemed more effective than the first few days was because the Iranians incorporated the lessons they learned from the first 48 hours of the war. You have seen the Russians and Ukrainians do this effectively in their war.

3. The types of interceptors that are required to shoot down ballistic missiles are expensive and difficult to produce in mass quantities. The U.S. only produces around 100-150 THAAD interceptors a year and a similar number of SM-3/6s. During the fight against the Houthis in 2024, the U.S. expended a year’s worth of SM-3 production in a singe day. I will assume Israel has stockpiled a decent number of Arrows and Stunners for its David’s Sling but they have to had expend many of those against the Houthis and during Iran’s previous missile attacks last year. It is therefore likely that Israel and U.S. are going to have start rationing their interceptors soon (if they haven’t already) – further increasing the effectiveness of even smaller Iranian barrages.

Bottom line – even if this smaller estimate of Iranian ballistic missiles that can reach Israel is accurate, Iran can still inflict a lot of damage on Israel, U.S. bases, and other countries in the region.
