But for me the critical issue is whether Saudi Arabia truly wants to ‘align’ with Iran (which I doubt) or whether it is sufficiently confident of a sea-change in the long-term strategic disposition of the United States – what the precisely that sea-change would entail is critical, as is their belief that it is indeed long-term, i.e., embedded in the MIC/Intel establishment in Washington; independent of Trump. This same critical issue applies to Russia – can they be absolutely assured of a change of US disposition and what exactly would that entail? I don’t throw that out lightly – the last thing anyone could expect from Washington at this stage is ‘word of honour’. So something substantial and serious will have to be put on the table to rescue the situation.

As regards China, they are in the same position as Japan prior to WW2 – devoid of oil resources and entirely dependent on them. To that extent, it must surely be a priority for the US, almost regardless of cost, to prevent China from securing a ‘beachhead’ in the ME. They are still in a position to do so, but not for long. The Saudis provide the US with the bridge back to that energy chokehold over China, so IMO watch for overtures both with regard to boxing in China and securing peace re Israel.

(As an aside, my thinking, perhaps naively, was that the Chinese were aiming for a land route through Pakistan to Iran and the ME in lieu of a sufficently large navy to take on the US – carrier killer missiles notwithstanding?)

Chinese domestic production is 3.8 million BPD.
Consumption is 16.5 million BPD.

In order to survive a potential war with the US/West (for whatever that is worth under the worst possible cirumstances) the Chinese would have to have geographically proximate supply lines – Indonesia produces far less than China (1 mpd) and beyond that there are no major oil producers until you arrive at the Persian Gulf. Outside of that they might access Russian supply from the far east/Siberia but even that is far from logistically feasible, at scale, being 2000+ km distant over land, without infrastructure to transport – even though it may now be under construction.

I honestly think the reason the Chinese are quietly disposed on the international front is because they are aware of two fundamental strategic weaknesses 1) no navy yet capable of countering US dominance and 2) no capacity to stop an energy stranglehold on their economy. These two issues are strategically debilitating.

As I have long argued on this platform and on my blog, if the US ever attempts to do so, it would mean war against China, Russia, and Iran combined — with many friendly smaller nations assisting according to their capability.

In a big war against China, Russia, and Iran, the US Navy would be dealt an unprecedented tactical and strategic defeat. It would be almost immediately demonstrated that the supercarrier is an obsolete relic of a bygone era, and that virtually all legacy surface warships are fat targets for asymmetric means of firepower.

Any blockade, of necessity, would be fought in littoral waters, where the vulnerabilities of the US naval force would be most effectively exploited.
