The Times reports Russia arming ‘shadow fleet’ tankers

The Times claims Russia has begun installing weapons on some tankers of its so-called “shadow fleet.” In particular, machine guns were allegedly spotted on the gas carrier Marshal Vasilevsky, which could be used not only for defense against drones but also to repel boarding attempts. Experts interviewed by the publication expressed the “unexpected” thought that such actions could seriously complicate future strategies to seize Russian ships in neutral waters. Of course, if all this is actually used. Weapons don’t fire by themselves.

I’ve seen this report a few times over time now.  Perhaps it is a fake.

Maybe it is a fake story. But it is well known that in zones of piracy some “western” ships have been carrying marksmen who do shoot at pirates, if they’re actually pirates is another question. I have read a bulletin board on the bridge of an Exxon tanker in San Pedro detailing the use way fire-hoses were to be used to repel “pirates”…and there were stories of steam hoses too. (in those days most of the ships were steam)  A “shadow fleet” is one that the west does not like,…supposedly they say this because the insurance is not through “London”, but the reality is more complex….being if the cargo does not please the imperialists. Arming merchant ships is in history of course, quite ordinary. They say that the Chinese have developed weaponized shipping containers, and we assume so has everybody else.  In my youthful days it was considered good sense to carry guns, rifles and pistols, aboard fishing and pleasure boats inland and offshore from California. I saw a MAC-10 brandished 30 years ago in response to a fella on another boat brandishing a pistol… Anyway, the story fake or not, would make sense.
