i’ve been mulling it from a different tack, & i’m praying you don’t ingest this the wrong way, simply that you asked what we’ve been worrying.

…are we getting ahead of ourselves worrying the words?  everybody knows when the inspired composed the inspired constitution its authors were living on land their ancestors had stolen, their ploughs broke blood soaked land never before tilled.  many owned other men & women, a few had children born to their female slaves & these children were never allowed to be acknowledged as the authors’ progeny.  yet nonetheless the words were true as if heaven sent?

words are important & some have a fine patina, while others are worn clean through…so i’ve been wondering if before we get to worrying about fixing the wording we might begin living the words, securing in our minds & hearts the living difference between of/for/by?

i concede however—it’s possible that of/for/by are crucial & nothing can move forward cleanly, solidly before that has been firmly fixed.  sorta like priming the canvas, knowing your ground is essential…we only have to gaze upon da vinci’s Last Supper to know how  truly important it is.

Thanks! The USC was not something I had in mind. If pressed, I’d say the USC does not describe a democratic form. I’d say that it describes an ad hoc oligarchic republic, one that was universally understood to be voluntary and enforced by the ever possible secession of States; until Lincoln tore it to pieces and created by illegal violence and tyranny an Imperial State that, after a time, followed, sometimes,internally, some of the republican forms. I have doubts, by the way, that USC 1789 was actually ratified. Even so, the basic law is primarily a limitation of the central government, only specific power is granted, and explicitly all other power resides with the individual states, and the people. To-day it is obvious that Alberto Gonzalez, 43’s real estate lawyer, spoke the truth when he said the document was “quaint”, and 43 said “just a goddamn piece of paper”.

As I said, ad hoc. Was it ever viable? Ever to the benefit of the people? To one class and not another?

The older I get, the more I doubt that the people are able to govern wisely to the benefit of one another, that democracy in a happy state means for, for the people…a good king, and good central committee, … the key being good, competent, one that loves the people. The actual form of the government probably doesn’t matter much.  Anyway, as Hedges notes in his essay to-day, we don’t have no kinna democracy now.

At this time, I think that China is democratic. And so is Russia. They have governments that care about the people, all of them.
