Thanks for reminder. I’d thought of the more POLITICAL role of this term, as it’s the same title given to most Muslim rulers since the Islamic Prophet, PBUH. Caliph (alternate spelling) also means the “successor of the Prophet.” But its more ancient meaning you mentioned also holds.

Additionally, the Qur’an teaches it was used for ancient Israelites too – the Prophet-King David was made the first with that title of Caliph.
