Only months into his six-year term (ending 9 January 2031), he has thrown himself into the US–Israeli project, opening a confrontation with the resistance and shredding the last vestiges of his credibility. Once presented as a potential mediator, Aoun is partnered in blocking financial aid to Hezbollah, to reconstruct what Israel has destroyed, and has lied to Hezbollah, AMAL, and all those who stood against American and Saudi diktats.

Instead of honouring his commitments, he has aligned with foreign patrons whose generosity (Saudi Arabia is very generous with the Lebanese president, according to former president Emile Lahud, providing a personal handsome monthly payment) flows to him personally while leaving Lebanon itself to pay the price.

By siding so brazenly with US–Israeli interests, Aoun has chained Lebanon’s future to instability. With almost six years still to run in his presidency, the country stares down the barrel of prolonged unrest — or, in the worst case, civil war. This is no idle speculation. Lebanon’s bloody past makes clear what happens when power is stripped of legitimacy. Aoun’s choice to stand with external agendas has emptied the presidency of sovereignty and turned it into a lever for others’ wars.

Prime Minister Nawaf Salam, with perhaps six months left before parliamentary elections, is a sideshow; the presidency is the immovable centre of power. And so the question must be asked: in a civil war, what would Aoun rule? Would he lean on takfiri militants spilling over from Syria, or call on the Israeli Air Force to save him? Either scenario exposes him as a president without a country, a leader willing to preside over fragments of a shattered state if that is what his patrons demand. Washington could, in theory, order its allies in Beirut to ease off, but this is unlikely.

Israel has every interest in a Lebanon pushed back into chaos, and Aoun has made himself the willing instrument of that design.

Consider how ridiculous the 12-Day War was—relying on standoff weapons and Afghan saboteurs while Iran rained down missiles. But Israel won’t give up and therefore neither will the US. They see Iran as the weakest link in an effort to revive the US hegemony on which all of Israel’s maximalist aims, domestic and regional, rest.

I think the *goal* is to make Turkish involvement inevitable (not that Turkey wants this, would win, or that such a war would remain localized). US/Israel will continue to remove guardrails and to stir the pot. Azeris would play a role, but the Kurds, too.

The Zangezur deal is audacious as is. If it were to go uncontested, the West would use it as a pressure point, ratcheting it up to starve the burgeoning Middle Corridor and the existing North-South one. If there’s a war, then the other side is being “contested” or “tied down,” which DC considers a win in itself.

The empire is applying pressure where it can, and the options to do so are much more limited than they were in the past. Things become more desperate as this dynamic plays out.

In fact I had to go back and review pictures of his arrival to realize they’d even been present for the ceremony at all, initially I’d thought there’d been no troops assembled whatsoever.

This is how it’s done in Russia for a visit of, frankly, far lesser importance. Xi Jinping is a powerful man but was just dropping by to watch a parade at the time, not negotiate a peace treaty.

I keep banging this drum. We saw this at the Army’s 250th birthday parade two months ago and we just saw it again. We aren’t impressing or scaring anybody by being ostentatiously unable to march in step, do basic drill, or organize straightforward military ceremonies when the eyes of the world are focused on us. In other words, Finland gave up territory and accepted Soviet impositions on both its domestic politics and foreign policy.
