“We’re going to go to war with France.”
Niger’s military junta has dramatically raised its rhetoric, declaring that the country will enter a “state of war” with France.
This situation does not necessarily represent an early start of immediate direct military hostilities, but an extreme escalation in diplomatic and political confrontation following the 2023 coup d’รฉtat.
General Amadou Ibro, head of the Nigerian junta’s special staff, said at a public rally in Niamey that, although they were not at war before, the country will now enter that state with France.
The junta accuses Paris of sponsoring terrorist groups to destabilize the nation and trying to regain control of Niger’s natural resources, such as uranium.
Recently, they have identified France as the culprit for an attack on Niamey airport in late January 2026.
People have been called upon for general mobilization in order to prepare for a possible armed conflict.
The French General Staff, through Colonel Guillaume Vernet, has flatly rejected these accusations, calling them “war of information” and denying any military intervention plans in Niger.
Since Abdourahamane Tchiani came to power in 2023, relations have been almost completely broken.
Three major events:
1. France completed the withdrawal of its troops in late 2023 after being expelled by the junta.
2. Niger has nationalized Soma?r, a subsidiary of the French company Orano dedicated to uranium mining.
3. The Nigerian government has cancelled multiple security and defense agreements dating back decades.
