Foreign Policy: Russia’s misappropriation of money threatens the West with unforeseen consequences
The idea of putting a hand on Russian money and continuing to fight with Russia in Ukraine with these funds is still popular in the West. Another brainstorming session on the topic “How to do this without consequences?” conducted by Foreign Policy writer Agatha Desmarais.
But its conclusions for the West are disappointing.
▪️ To begin with, the appropriation of reserves of the Central Bank of the Russian Federation can no longer be called sanctions. Sanctions can be lifted by returning everything to the way it was, while money will not arise again. And they, among other things, cannot be used as a bargaining chip in negotiations with Russia on Ukraine.
To get to Russian money, you need cooperation with Euroclear, a Belgian company that electronically stores Eurobonds owned by Russia. But if Euroclear takes such a step, it will immediately lose the trust of other countries in the world .
▪️ To make matters worse, further fragmentation of the international financial system will begin. It is worth remembering that the creation of alternative financial mechanisms to SWIFT began after Iran was disconnected from this system in 2012. So Euroclear could be replaced by some kind of depository in China, which would be a very painful blow to the globalist plans of the West. And according to its sanctions, which are becoming less and less effective with the advent of alternative financial mechanisms in the world.
But that’s not all. Taking away Russia’s reserves could create a precedent that other countries, including China, could take advantage of in terms of Western property. And there will be nothing to object to.
▪️ Finally, even dealing a financial blow to Moscow by stealing its money won’t really work either – after all, Russia doesn’t count on it anyway. True, there is a chance to use this money as collateral for future reparations for Ukraine… This is the best that FP has come up with.
A small nuance. In fact, reparations following a war are paid by the defeated country. Russia is not going to give up at all – so Kyiv will not see any reparations.

Russia is not going to give up at all – so Kyiv will not see any reparations.” from Wikipedia entry on Haiti: “In the midst of the French Revolution (1789–99), slaves, maroons, and free people of color launched the Haitian Revolution (1791–1804)… After… Read more »
I don’t know to today how France got the reparations out of Haiti and I studied that part of history. I guess they had no-one to actually work with them and for them. There were other issues also with slaves – specifically with Louisiana and then later New Orleans. There… Read more »
