Comparisons: Scott Ritter (after his Russian trip) and a fellow called Edward
Cast your minds back and I was certainly in the front row of this choir. Just after the SMO started, Scott Ritter told big stories about the million man NATO force that would swoop in and take Russia to the cleaners. Most of us called him unhinged, and I know some of his friends took him to the cleaners and others are still ignoring him to this day.
It is a wonderful experience to see someone change. And it appears that he certainly has. In this video he tells the story of his visit to Russia and on coming back, he realized that his experience and the American understanding were materially opposite. In combination with his essay for RT, this unravels so very clearly what we outside the US struggle with, even with just friendships with USAmericans. Our experience is materially opposite.
In the video he tells of how the Russian elite classes moved out of the Russia and that this was good. Of course not every single one, but enough to make a difference. This needs to be contrasted with the next piece, where the Bigger than Big supposed Russian Patriots are as much of a nuisance, as those elite classes.

Compare with this gringo, saying the exact opposite: https://edwardslavsquat.substack.com/p/russias-neoliberal-elites-are-thriving
He continually nibbles away at the edges of Russian society and as long as he can leave somewhat of a negative message, portraying that Russia on some level is just like the West, then he is content. He has been going on like this since mid-Covid and it appears that nobody wants to employ him as a journalist any longer. If you have no interest in his Russian neoliberal elites, take a look at his list of essays. https://substack.com/@edwardslavsquat
From Scott’s experience, we can say again that travel nourishes the soul. Also, one can never go home again, as one now looks at home through different eyes.
Thank you for this post. Interesting to hear about Ritter, a man apparently overcoming his Americanness – always a useful thing to do. Your post was enough for me but I did skim through the RT essay for completeness, and truly I wish Ritter well on his journey to becoming… Read more »
