Xi Jinping’s trip to the US in September limited

If this is true and I have not seen this from the Chinese readouts, it tells a very big story.  No cosy visits at Mar-A-Lago and only a visit to a White House that is a construction site.  Remember during Trump’s 1st administration he welcomed Xi Jinping and his wife at Mar-A-Lago and ‘over beautiful chocolate cake’ announced that the US had just bombed Syria.  I remember thinking at the time that President Xi will in my opinion never visit Trump at his home again.   Xi Jinping visiting the UNGA is not a big deal as many Presidents will not attend this year.   Bear in mind visa problems with Marco Rubio stating that anyone that expresses criticism to Israel will not receive US visas.  No President will take the risk that a visa will not be issued, although this is not normally an issue for top leaders.

Chinese President Xi Jinping will not attend the United Nations General Assembly in New York during his upcoming visit to the United States, limiting his trip to a September 24 meeting with President Donald Trump in Washington, a report says.

Xi is expected to arrive in the US around September 23 and leave on September 25, with no plans to travel to New York for the UN General Assembly, Politico reported on Monday, citing “four people familiar with his travel plans.”

One of the people said Xi would “fly in likely late on Sept. 23 — he isn’t doing UNGA — and fly out on the 25th.” “He’ll really only have one day of meetings at the White House on the 24th,” the person added.

The White House confirmed that Xi will visit the White House on September 24, but declined to comment on other possible activities on his US schedule.

Xi’s decision means he will not attend the General Debate of the UN General Assembly, which begins on September 22 and brings world officials to New York for a week of speeches and meetings.

The possibility of a UN appearance had attracted attention in Washington diplomatic circles following the announcement of the September 24 Trump-Xi summit.

“When the Sept. 24 summit date was initially announced, people pointed out that the Chinese may have suggested that date so he could also go to New York City for UNGA,” a Washington-based European Union diplomat said.

The diplomat also said New York-based diplomats had observed that Beijing had not sent an advance team to the city, something that would normally be expected ahead of a visit by Xi.

Xi last traveled to New York to address the General Assembly in 2015, when he attended events marking the 70th anniversary of the United Nations.

In 2021, during the COVID-19 pandemic, he addressed the General Assembly by video link. In that speech, he implicitly referred to the US failure in Afghanistan shortly before the address, while promoting a vision of international development centered on China’s economic model.
